Hi all

Well, just picked BABY up tonight after the 5th visit to the shop to try to get her fixed.
He pulled the distributor AGAIN and found that the bushing under the cam plate was positioned properly so the cam plate wasn't sitting in there correctly.He fixed that. Also, the main wire from the coil to the distributor was almost cut in two somehow. It was only together by a couple of strands and as soon as he gave it a very slight tug it gave on him and come completely apart so he replaced that. ( yes Warren, you can pat yourself on the back now LOL) Lastly, he replaced some of the gaskets in the carb.
The bottom line after driving the car home.....it's a little better than after I picked it up from him last week but still not as good as it was before he touched it originally!!!
:hb

Mechanics = :r

The idle is a little better now from last week. At least it's not hanging up at 1200rpm's. It's hanging around 800 now but it sounds a WHOLE LOT more choppy than it ever used to before he touched it. A lot more of that LOP LOP LOP LOP LOP LOP sound you hear from real hot rods that have more radical cams.
This mechanic is now sayinng he doesn't think the car has the normal 30-30 cam in it but I can't say for sure one way or the other as it was the previous owner who had the motor rebuilt during the restoration so who knows what it really in there.

He left the vacuum line plugged which does not make me happy at all!
The other "wonderful" news he told me was that he thinks the valve springs may need to be replaced soon and even better yet that the motor is blowinng oil back thru the breather tube into the air cleaner so I guess that means I need new rings??
I mean geez, this is supposed to be a rebuilt motor. I'm beginning to think all they did was take it apart, paint the block to look fresh, and reassemble it!!

So as I expected last week, it looks like I'm about to get some lessons in engine repair from my generous neighbor. Thank god for a fellow Vetter in my development who works on his own cars.
Oh, Warren and Jerry - I STILL haven't forgotten about you guys either!
:)

Try a junk yard for an old Chevy distributor, and install it after ONLY putting new points in it.

OR

Ask your neighbor if he has a Chevy distributor that you can borrow for an hour or so and install it.

If the problems go away, take the screwed up distributor that the mechanic is working on and send it to a resto shop (I almost said install it in the mechanic - sorry).
