I just bought a 1989 coupe a month ago and was wondering about the upshift light. So far it has not come on. I'm wondering if it is just disabled or broken or maybe I have not put the car through whatever it is that makes it light up. What seems to activate it is not all that clear from what I've read. I do see the light upon startup. Thanks

If you have an automatic it won't light up. It's meant for the manual transmission but the dash is the same for all cars.

Not true, I have an auto and mine comes on if I sit on the highway at 65-70 in D for a minute or two, then it comes on and goes away if I shift to OD.

So they do work on Autos.

Yup, I know it works in that situation, and I am pretty sure if you like to tool around and shift it yourself, and leave it in one or two I think it lights up too.

Mine doesn't come on, I wonder if it is disconnected.

Well I am 99 percent sure that mine comes on, the first time it came on I was shocked, then remembered I had it in a lower gear, then when I upshifted it went off. I will check again tomorrow since I am planning on driving it to school.

TOOL AROUND ? :L I always manually shift my auto. I usually start in second and lean into it if I don't want a quick shift into second when I'm from a stop (unless I'm at the track, then it's manual all the way), and I down shift it as far as second as well.

The upshift arrow comes on only during acceleration. and then it is during gentle or no acceleration when the computer determines that you are not getting optimum milage economy from your actions. If you leave it in OD you'll never see it if your TV cable is set properly. :w
