In the process of trying to get the vacuum brake booster unbolted from the firewall. Is there an easy way? It looks like I have to go under the dash. There's not a lot of room. Do I have to make some?

I'm new here and wish to say hello to everyone.

Best Regards

I just replaced a power brake booster a couple days ago. You shouldnt have to take anything out to make room. You can get at the bolts under the dash with a ratchet, a real long extension, and a universal joint(swivel thing). I forget what size the bolt is. There is one on the bottom left that has two bolts on it. The top ones are tricky to get to, you have to find the right angle through all the wires and a hand up there to guide the socket on it. That should be about all there is to it.

Thanks for your response Maverick. I'll give it a shot this weekend. Definetly will put my mind into patience mode.

Access to those booster nuts is easier if you remove the speedo/tach cluster (on 78 - 82s), which is a project itself but not too difficult. Just be very careful not to damage the printed circuit on the back of the cluster when you reach behind to unclip the the connectors and work the assembly out. You might also loosen the steering column and let it drop a couple of inches.

Good luck, Phil

Thanks Phil for the additional insight. The extra room and addittional angle(s) of entry will help, especialy putting back the retainer clip for pedal/booster plunger.

Best Regards

Ray I just put a new booster into my 78 and it was worth the extra time to pull the instrument cluster. Even with the clusster out the booster bolts are a pain. One other caution.....I goofed and forgot to bench bleed the master cylinder :confused I took me days to get all of the air out of the system......John

Thanks John for your input. I'll most surely bench bleed the master prior to install. Less headaches the better. :)

Best regards Ray
