Vacuum regulated tripower or mechanical? 67 HELP

I've read all your suggestions and comments on this whole tripower vacuum vs mechanical topic.At this point I'm a little confused on what is the best/most reliable way to go..

67, you indicated converting.

Thirty-six years ago, I removed the vacuum pieces, and ran progressive throttle linkage under the theory that my toe was smarter than vacuum could ever be. ;LOL

Now, I'm not so sure.

Do you have any idea where I can purchase the "progressive"linkages required and maybe some photos of how this is might be done.

Has anyone else gone w/ progressive linkagage for their tripowers??

Jim,

I have used several tri-carb setups in my time. Some were very much hot rod setups with full mechanical linkage, usually set up in progressive fashion.

I have also owned or restored several 400 and 435hp tri-power setups. Years ago I tuned many of these type of cars and set some up for mechanical linkage.

All that being said, for pure street driving and enjoyment I would keep the vacuum setup and enjoy the drivability that the original configuration can provide.

I agree with Brian - the factory venturi vacuum-actuated system gives smooth response and brings it on progressively; cobbled-up mechanical systems cause more problems than they solve.

I'm really glad you both came back w/positive vacuum feedback.I was'nt really excited w/changing out my secondaries.My 427 has'nt ever ran well this past summer(my 1st for the car)so I really dont know how this car is going to perform,but I think if it runs as well as Craig(my carb builder)said they ran on his 327,he said to hang on.So I'm pretty excited to get back on the road.
John, thanks again for recommending Craig to Barry,I think he did a nice job..time will tell.
I'm going to replace the plugs,distr.cap,and rotor at same time.Oh and time it also w/my new timing light.

1 last question-what is the torque required on the carb to intake bolts.They did'nt require much to get them off,and Craig told me to put lock washers on them also. Thanks again. Jim

85-120 INCH-pounds (7-10 ft-lbs).

Listen to the majority, leave it alone, the vacuum works just fine. Trying to mechanically link progressive to a factory tri power with out pumps in the two end carbs will be a nightmare on performance whether it`s a 400 or a 435. :upthumbs
 
you WILL notice that there will be a hesitation when the secondaries kick in on a progressive linkage..subtle, but it will be there...it doesn't sound like you will do anything other than granny drive it (not a pejorative, you don't sound like a street racer)....just leave the factory setup alone and enjoy it :beer

You've both solidified my decision to stay w/ vacuum.I just hope after putting them back on,I dont have any other problems.really looking forward to it running smooth.And a little quietter would be nice,I havent heard of a good compromise for my apparently blown out side exhausts.Alot on the market but would like to listen to before I buy.I guess that would be another thread.. Jim
