Iam new to this forum and I got to say it looks like a good one..
anyway my question is Iam looking at a 1962 vette, its a beauty but it doesnt have the original engine its a 350. It has a powerglide and vintage air added. Both tops included. My main issue is that the frame has been repaired on both sides near the front ,say if your looking from underneath just infront of the door on both sides. Who ever did the work did a nice job and it is very stout. If you were looking at this car how much would you take off for this and what would be your total value for the car. Thanks for any help.
Roland.

When I am figuring value of a vehicle.I find the value of a #1 car and then work backwards from the figure. Then try and figure how much it would cost to make it into a #1 car.

Vettes are a little more complecated for me to figure out because When I figure a vette I figure #1 means its had documents and a a NCRS top flight under it. Some vettes can never be flight judged. So that blows my therory with a vette .

This is a link to a vette calculator from a web site I hope this helpsprice calculator click here

With all the post's on the 61/62 I guess they are real hot this year

Welcome Roland,

Good luck with your '62 purchase.

Tom

I'm curious as to the frame repair. If I'm reading your post correctly, the repair is in front of the doors. This is a most unusual area for the typical Corvette frame rust repair.

Also, you say that the repair is "stout". I would think that a good repair would be undetectable. It it patched up with "boilerplate" welded over the frame? Is there any evidence of a new front nose/one piece nose? I wonder if the car took a huge shot in the nose, requiring the frame repairs you describe.

I can't imagine somebody "subframing" a car like this. That is the process in which a front subframe with all the suspension/brakes, etc. is grafted onto the original frame. This is usually done with fat fendered street rods. Chuck

ChuckG, The welds on both sides seem to be boxed around the frame ,with a continuous bead around the edge of each plate. Its not pretty but like I said its stout. How much do you think this will affect the value. Thanks for the feedback. By the way I dont have much history of this car but it does not appear to have been hit in the front but the jurys still out.
Roland

I agree with Chuck. I can't imagine why a solid axle would need repair in this area of the frame. Sounds like someone made one frame out of two. As for effecting the value, No matter how well done any restorer or knowledgable Corvette person will look at that frame as junk needing replaced. When the time comes you will have a hard time selling this car.

As a non-original motor driver quality car in nice condition other than the frame I would think it would be in the upper 20s price range. Call Corvette Central and get a price for a new frame and ask for an estimate on labor time. Deduct this from the price asked for the car. You also can find a used frame but the labor will be more intensive restoring it and getting it ready to install.

If I were looking at this car with you as an advisor doing a pre-purchase inspection I would advise you to walk away. Something is fishy here. If you could get it cheap enough this may be a prime candidate for a Paul Newman C5 suspension chassis conversion. Someone posted a while back looking for a car like this to do the C5 thing to.

Maybe this is the car. :D

We took the 62 over to a garage and put it on a rack, I thought we were going to be looking at a small area that had been patched. Everything from the front end back has been boxed in. Ive never seen so mush welding and work go into anything that that could of devalued this car any more. Shes a looker on top ,but I walked away.
Roland.

Roland,
You did the right thing. The right car is out there someplace.
there are usually several pages of '61 and '62s in Corvette and Chevy Trader. Some in the 20s.

IH2LOSE,
This may be the car you are looking for. With a frame that bad you should be able to negotiate a deal.

Tom

the dealer I was working with paid $27,500 for the car. I know because this car was advertised in the paper . I was the first to call and missed it because of a personal emergency. I was willing to give the dealer who bought the car a profit because this car had the powerglide and vintage air, and like I said before its nice to look at. . If youve ever seen a beautiful woman with bad teeth you know how I feel right now.

Nice But Pass!!!!!

The 62 will always be a driver, that's it! Nobody will be willing to pay a fair price because the value of it will remain stable, as long as the condition stays the same, but!

But you are going to probably start to pour money into it that you will never get back. You would be better off buying an original 62 in fair condition and then upgrade it, because you will at least have an investment.

Please pass, and you will thank all of us down the road.

l'm sure the 62 was involved in a accident and someone took two 62's and pieced them together.

By the way a great looking broad with bad teeth l can take, but a vette that has a mystery behind it pass!

Alan

A used replacement frame I am told should be valued at around 3 grand.with that in mind and knowing that you could never just replace a frame (thinking you would restore replace all components that would also be associated with the suspention.mounts, brake and fule lines) It would put the value of the car alot lower then what he is asking. Some body will see the car and feel the frame is NOT important to value and make the purchase,As we all know often time beuty is judged to the surface only and folks some time over look the major problems as as stated with a bad set of teeth,

I am still searching for my perfect car.

and all my fellow forum members who send me links, and email of possible leads to a 61/62 I sincerley thank you guys,I dont know how to describe this by I am possesed buy the thought of this car,I dream of it,I day dream of it,I have it completely built in my head allready. If I could only aquire the car and start working on it.I feel this car will be complete in one winter.I have complete material list with suppliers in mind all ready. So again thanks for keeping me in mind.

I also hope to find a car off the road that needs me to save it from a life of sitting. A car that others would walk away from.
