Vapor Cannister

I bought the filter for the vapor cannister recently. This morning I was on top of the car, under the car, etc., and could not for the live of me figure out how to get at it. From the top there are a hole bunch of things in the way and from the bottom I couldn't even see it much less get at it.

Anybody know how to get at it?

Bob- Replaced mine last winter along with all new vapor hoses. I removed from under the car. Its a little tight up in there.

Thanks Dave. I'll have to take another look. To be honest, I couldn't even see it from under the car.

Bob- I just went out to the garage for another look. There is just enough room between the frame and the fender to remove it. It was a little time consuming getting that job done as I remember. Get the left side of the car as high on jack stands as you can.

You might find it easiest if you remove the 3 bolts holding the brackets to the inner fender and take it out as a unit to work on it

The triangle splash plate at the rear of the well can be remoced quite easily if I remember right. once that is dropped out it's a piece of cake to remove the canister. I'll double checkin the morning but removing it will save a world of time and effort.

Jim,

I got under the car today planning on removing the splash plate. It appears to have 3 screws/bolts. Two are easy to get to, they come straight down. The third appears to come from the outside of the car and is behind the trim plate that rund under the door between the wheels. It appears that this will have to be removed as well.

Do I have this figured out or am I missing something?

I still think it would be easier for you to remove the cannister as a unit by the 3 bolts to the inner fender well. The splash shield has 2 bolts behind the rocker panel and 2 bolts from the inner fender. The rocker panel would have to be removed to get the 2 bolts behind it.

I'll take a look at this next chance I get. I misread the earlier post to mean to remove the splash shield then take it out as a unit.

Do the three bolts that hold it into the fender well come from outside the fender and then into the cannister bracket or the other way around?

The 3 bolts are from the inner fender to the bracket that holds the cannister.

I already had the rockers off so I forgot to mention it. To clear what I said earlier. the slpash plate is only being removed for an easier exit of the canister. the three bolts in the fender will have to be loosened no removered to remove the canister and bracket together.

I just read this and I'm not sure if it's any clearer myself.

Is the rocker panel the silver trim plate I am referring to under the door running from wheel to wheel?

While we're on the topic, can anyone tell me the pluses/minuses of having an evap canister and what the adverse affects of having a nonfunctioning or one with a dirty filter?
If it has anything to do with cleaner emissions or hinders performance in any way, I'll be sure and remove it next time I'm under the car. If I should leave it, I probably better service it since I bought the car in late July but have no idea how long it's been since last changed. Thanks guys.

You may form a vacuum in your fuel tank if this cannister has been removed and the vapor line to the tank capped off. It also collects gas that evaporates and sends them to the carb for burning. Without the cannister, the gas escapes into the atmosphere with the resultant gas smell around the car.

thanks again for your help, now I just need to figure out why gas is flooding my canister whenever I fill up... must be overflowing from somewhere
