Hey does anybody know how to disable the vats on an 84?

Mine has become unpredicatable. It comes on at the strangest times and sometimes it won't go off and I have to monkey with the door locks for 10 minutes to get it to go off long enough to start the car. Then it comes right back on. :confused

I think instead of troubleshooting it I just want to shoot it.:r

Thanks!

David

Are you talking about the Vehicle Anti Theft System (VATS)? This did not come out until 1986.

Some kind of standard security the car came with. In the center console it says "SECURITY" when it's armed.

Thanks!

Now isn't the VATS the system that uses the resistor chip in the key. If the resistor doesn't match the car will go into some type of cycle where it cant be started for set period of time. I cant really remeber, however i knew once. The other theft system is the alarm hooked up to the horn. When you power lock the car it is activated. I will see what kind of info i can find. Until then good luck man.

Yes, it's the one that powers up when you lock the car. The ignition key is the old style. Sorry I mentioned VATS.

Thanks!

I had my car repainted about 4 years ago. When they did it, I had the weatherstriping along the window replaced. Apparently they had to take the door panel off to do so. Ever since I had problems with the alarm. I dont know why I haven't had it fixed yet, just another something on my to do list i guess. Well it started giving me problems. It would go off, and it took forever to shut it off. Then it would go off everytime I power locked the doors. When the alarm would go off everything in the car worked. I could start the car, drive it, do pretty much anything. When it would go off away from home, I would just reach under the hood and unplug the two horns. The horn switch would still activate but with no noise. For about 5 minutes it would go off, then stop. However as soon as I opened the door again it would go off. So basically the only way i could get it to go off was by taking the negative terminal off the battery. I think that there is something wrong with the door lock cylinder. I would guess the same in both our cases. Until I get it fixed I just dont power lock the car. It will prevent you from having the alarm go off. Occasionally my girlfriend will power lock the car so i just have to reset it. I wish i could help more.
