Serial number plate from 35th anniversary I am restoring is missing. Any suggestions on how to verify serial number? Is there a way to match them via VIN?

Couldn't Chevy or the NCM do this?

Have you tried Carfax or another similar VIN search? I know they weren't given unique VIN numbers (that would have been too easy!). Also try going to your local title agency and see if you can locate past owners.

Good Luck!

Jim

Why is it missing? When the plate on the forward corner of the dash is gone, it usually means that the car had been declared as a salvage due to an accident or otherwise being declared as a total loss by an insurance company.

The VIN appears in other locations on the car so a local police agency should be able to find it and verify the VIN for you. You will probably have to show a bill of sale from a prior owner to get a re-issued title to get the legal ownership in your name. Do you have any proof of ownership?

He's not talking about the VIN, gentlemen. He's talking about the serial number for the commemorative 35th Anniversary edition of the '88. ;)

Would that be something that might be on a build sheet?

Someone or something had to tell the dude on the assembly line to install one.

You talking about the little stamped piece near the shifter?

Right. Seems one of the two sources could match the VIN to the 35th SN.

Thanks all for the info. Here's the sad tale of woe. Car in repair shop to fix overdrive glitch. Car stolen for joyride. To get past lockout they broke out the console plate with the the serial number tag on it and not to be found again. The VIN is intact and verified for titling when purchased. I am looking for the 35th anniversary tag and corresponding S/N on the console shift plate.

Thanks for all the help and advice!!!!

The '4+3' emblem is hard to find as well (at least it used to be).

Can the 35th Anniversary Registry be of some help??
http://www.35thregistry.com/news.htm They might be able to find prior ownership of the car and see if the car is in their database and get the information.

I would think the assembly line workers had a stack of the plates and just affixed one when the car went by. Would be pretty hard to miss the white interior and white paint with the black halo!! Also the build sheet should show RPO B18 as the key for the anniversary package to install the special interior emblems and RPO B57 for the exterior emblems.

Guess another question is whether or not there is a way to get another plate made even if the correct serial number is found.
