I am getting some vibration around 50-60 mph and while under the car; I have found some slack at the output shaft of the transmission (turbo 350). Without having removed the driveshaft or anything yet; I am wondering how difficult it might be to repair without removing the tranny. It appears to be the shaft and not just the yoke that is moving slightly. I was trying to remember what the housing looks like at the output end and if there s a bearing there that can be replaced in there. I have never done any auto tranny work but would also like to install a shiftkit while I'm at it to firm up the shifting. Does anyone have a diagram of a turbo 350 and as always, your input is appreciated.

So what with the yokes and the drive shaft are causing this problem? Do you think it might just be worn down U-joints? Is that what would cause this vibration? If not, what do you think?

Ujont looked ok, but when I pushed up and down on the yoke; I could see movement in the yoke. When I put it in gear, mainly reverse, it knocks pretty good too.

There's a bushing in trans tailshaft ... it's not a real big deal to replace ... trans stays in car. Usually when ts bushing is bad it'll usually be accompanied by a pretty serious fluid leak as the seal can't always make up for the added slop ... the sliding part of yoke may also be badly worn. IMHO, I'd stay away from the shift kit ... often cause premature trans failure ... despite what kit makers say. Change the ts bushing, ts seal, fluid & filter ... you'll probably be ok. Take a good look at u-joints when you have ds out ... and the wear on the yoke. These cars are real hard on half-shaft joints ... more so than ds joints ... check em all. Half-shaft u-joints are too often overlooked.

Thanks for your helpful reply. I am planning on addressing this real soon.

I agree. I'd dare say that the u-joints are a more likely culprit for a vibration than the trans. Sometimes it's hard to discern any play from wear while they are still on the car. Also, don't overlook your tires as a possible problem source. Your differential bushing comes to mind, too. It's cheap and a good time to replace it is when you pull your driveshaft out.

CS,

More food for thought:

Are your tires wearing evenly? Are the tires recently balanced and when was the last time you had a 4 wheel alignment done?

I've learned through the years to start looking at the basics first then move onto the more tougher things. This may be something as simple as tire/wheel balance. ;)

Good luck and be sure to let us know what you find.

Tire wear and handling are good, but I think an alignment is in order soon just to be sure.
