Need help finding out where to go to find out any info on my VIN to see if my 70 has ever been wrecked before???

I have some re-weld work on my front Passenger side shock tower mount (I think that's what its called), that I discovered after removing my upper a-arm.....can you say: SURPRISE!!!!.... :hb
and I don't know if that's all the damage or if there has been more. may have had something in the rear too but still looking. though not as obvious as the front. and i dont think this was ever done right, judging from the quality of the work in the pic, much less reported......

previous owner didn't really disclose much cause he didn't know either, OR DID HE..... but I do know he did race it, but he didn't mention anything about a wreck or something happening to that side.

Now is this the only way to find out this sort of thing, or are there alternative ways to figure if more has happend to the car in the past........other than the obvious bad welds......

Thanks again in Advance
for any assistance with my minor situation......
just hope its minor and not major.....

Dave,

That looks kind of nasty, but if the guy raced the car and had a wreck that he fixed, I don't think that would come up in DMV records.

Good luck,
Steve :w

Caefax and those type searches are only available on cars less than 10 years old. Your only hope is owner or previous owners who want to divulge the information.

Obviously there was a major fornt end hit to require that type of repair. You need to look at the frame and inside the fiberglass to see what was repaired or replaced.

Good luck!

WOW... only 10 years........that sux.....

what about classics, there has to be a way to find out info on their past history somehow right......

but I guess if the previous owner did the fix at his buddies garage, then there is probably no way of knowing for sure what happen.

but I hope I'm wrong and there is some other option for me to find out just a little more that I know about her now.....

well, since the body is off the frame it makes it allot easier to discover the damage, but to me, I cant tell if its supposed to be like that or not, well I can to some extent, but if its a newer weld blended in good, then I'm clueless.
is there some guide or something that shows, the frame work from the factory, or something of that sort to compare it to.

I could tell you that the front fiberglass has been modified, but for racing purposes (flares and stuff), I don't know if it was cause of a wreck or what. but I do know they could not fiberglass worth a dam, cause I'm going to have to cut it out, and re-do it. both the front, and rear.

That repair may not be from a wreck at all-it was a racer's trick to stiffen the shock supports on the cars for road racing-the car may not have been wrecked at all.

not true carfax works as far back to when they went to the 17 digit vin.

so what was that 80 something?

but it will not work for our cars back in the 70's, 60's, 50's

nothing from that far back

hey guys
thanks for the replies, but that still leaved me at the same spot, with no more than I already know about the car now.
I know carfax does that sort of thing, but I didn’t think they went that far back. was hoping they did, but this is sort of a fairly new research tool available for mainly late model cars......I figured someone here would know, or if they have ever needed to do this for you own car.....
thanks again
Dave
