I live in New York and cars prior to 1971 used only the registations to change hands. When I purchase a pre 71 car I make sure the seller has a current registation in his name,If its not current I make the seller register it and make it current and then you use a bill of sale and the current registration to register the car in your name.I am not sure what happens when you bring a pre 71 car from New York state into a state that has titles.
All of my collector cars that I own I write NON TRANSFERABLE across the back of the registration just incase they fall into the wrong hands,If I ever had to sell one of the cars I could go to a local D.M.V and the could issue me a replacement registration.
Good luck with your purchase
Last week I had to look at 64 corvette for somebody that had a 67 body on it with a big block hood and ralley wheels, and a other then a vette vin tag on it. We did not even look for what it was registered as as soon as I seen the vin on it we left.Just as with any used car use caution as all folks are not so fourth coming with the truth. This car was black with a black top and a red 66 interiour in it. The car was located in bronxsville New york.
