VIN number

Magnus,

Your vin should be riveted on the drivers side windshield pillar.
If your car is a '78 it should go something like:
1Z87L8S4xxxxx with the final 5 numbers being the actual number
car of the 40274 that were built that year....
That number is actually in several other places, but this is the
easiest place to find it.

I hope this helps :)

...The VIN code is 1Z87L8S400257...What can I read out of it....

1 Chevrolet Division of General Motors
Z model code Corvette
87 body style code sport coupe
L engine code L indicates the L-48 base engine
8 model year (78)
S plant code for St. Louis assembly plant
4 car line series code (4 for Corvette in 1978)
00257 consecutive unit number, the 257th 1978 Corvette assembled.

257 is a low production number; second or third day of production. Check your trim tag for a time/build date beginning with A.

:)

Magnus,

That sure looks like a body build date of August 9th to me.....
Which means the 1st or 2nd day of production for the year.
Early versus late should have little or no significant value difference
unless it's the very 1st, 00001 or the very last..

Running changes were made during the year, but none that
were earth-shattering. I've had 3 78's over the years, and I do
remember the moulding around the big back window being black,
then 1/2 chrome and black, and then all chrome as the year went on.
But that could be backwards..:chuckle

ENjoy your vette...
Mark B.
