I recently heard that on some of the steering columns for C1's (the example given was '62), the VIN was also stamped there (along with the door sill plate). Can anyone confirm or deny this? If so, what years during the C1 generation had this? I'm basically double-checking so I know for my '59.

Thanks,

A small stainless steel tag is on the steering with the vin number. Just look in over the fender and it should be near the top of the column.;) :v :m

Not sure exactly when it happened, but the tag was moved from being screwed on in the door jam to being spot welded on the steering column on C1's. I know my 1960 is on the steering column and the 56 and 57 were in the door jam. Must have happened during 58 or 59.
I beg someone will chime in soon with the precise time it happened!

Yes, I would like to know myself! I finally have a VIN # for my car, now I need to know where to put it!

Don't think the VIN was ever stamped on the steering column. The VIN tag was relocated there and spot welded to the column in 58 or 59 as others have stated. Chuck

The VIN plate began being spot-welded to the steering column jacket on 1960's around VIN # 1400-1500; prior to that they were attached in the door opening with two screws.
