I am a first time owner and got a *%&@ load of questions but I'll start with one about water pump noise. I started to hear a slight rattle arount the smog pump, AC and water pump. After a day or two it got louder and sounds like it is coming from water pump. It's not leaking but seems to be making quite a noise. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Once in a while when I start it, mostly when my wife in in the car with me, I acts like it is flooded and sputter and a minute or two and then takes off just fine. She thinks she is cursed!!!

Later I'll get to the brake master cyl, brake calipers, AC, U-joints, Clicking when turning wheels at a stop, as well as other sqeaks, rattles, thumps and misc strange noises. On the up side... I drove in the rain today and no leaks!

I would suggest you use a piece of hose as a stethoscope...just be careful around moving parts. You should also take the belt off...(its easy with just a rachet) then you can move all the pumps individually and see if you have any noise or resistance.

Take the aircleaner off...start the car...and check that the two injectors arn't leaking and they both have an even spray. Also change the fuel filter under the passenger floor on the frame rail.

The car is 21 years old...so tell your wife its not her...unless you know something I don't. ;)

For more information about the crossfire...go to http://www.crossfire.homeip.net/

Also buy the

A belt can sound like all sorts of problems. The disconnect mentioned is one way, plus you can carefully spray WD-40 or belt dressing on it while running, and listen for quieting. The smog pump makes some noise, too.

The X-fire puddles a bit at low RPM and stockers run a bit rich around town. Modded engines might even run richer, unless rechipped. The injectors sound like maladjusted valves.

The rack may be going, causing the steering click (and/or 'morning sickness'). I tried changing the rod feeding the steer-gearbox, which changed naught, so I drilled through the play area and bolted it. I had previously changed the rack. The play was evident once I removed the small metal shield on the steering shafts visible from above.

She IS an interior rattler; improved with later C-4s. Some use foam tape between the plastic surround joints to quiet it (R&R the screws holding the trim pieces).

Change the brake fluid when it gets quite dark to decrease corrosion (water) in the brake system. The parts are aluminum and resist rebuild, favoring replacement.

My A/C worked better before it got worked on, I found, but tinting the windows did help, once they get cooled down.

U-joints?...there's ONLY six!

Welcome and enjoy the performance! :w

The belt tensioner pulley bearing is a common cause of clicking. Listen to WalePirot, from what I have seen in his post if it can break he has fixed it.He has a high percentage of being right.Anything he has said about a vette I have made special note to remember. :upthumbs

There is a LOT of expertise here, from MANY

Aw, shucks.........;worship thanks, guys.....the check's in the mail. :w

I hear ya there. WP knows his stuff.

G Winter is normally right on with his responses also.

Just as a check of the water pump feel the weep hole on the underside of the shaft housing ... if you have any mositure its a sign.

:w

BTW welcome to :CAC

I agree.....whalepirot knows a thing or two....maybe three.

I have an '84 also and had noise from the front of the engine. It was the smog pump. Not too big a deal to get to. Make sure you get a good manual. I picked up a Haynes. With that book and all the knowledge on this forum, there isn't much a guy can't do for himself.

I just replaced the upper and lower spindle rod bushings on mine. Sounds like a new Vette (to me anyway!).

I am not disappointed with the Cross-Fire Injection....I figure it is a novelty almost.... since only 2 years of Vette's have it. ('82 & '84)

Anyway, like they said, it is 21 years old and will need some TLC but hey....that is half the fun.
