Can anyone tell me how to check what size clutch and number of splines I have without prior removal? It is a 1977 with L82. Also does anyone have any brand recommendations for the best heavy duty clutch replacement? Thanks!

Hi Proline, I would think that by looking up the part by application. If that did not work then look up by trany #, I think the # is on the passenger side of the trany case. If all that doesn't work at the local chevy parts counter then maybe one of the NCRS books will solve the problem. As for which Mfg. to get, I would think any would do for a stock application. The important part is to get all the wear items like the pilot bushing, throw-out bearing, fork ball & fork, and to have the fly wheel re-surfaced(very important), fork boot, check trany mount for wear, clutch linkage springs and actuator rods, and re-align the shift linkage and clean & lube the shifter head. All this is important if this the first time in a long time between clutch R&R's. There is a Mfg that has a unique lever system on their preassure plate that makes the pedel effort lighter without giving up clamping preassure, Hayes I think. Good luck, tt72

Thanks for the reply! I don't understand what you mean by "application"- Could you elaborate on that a little? In the parts books for 1977 I have found 10.5 & 11" clutch sizes as well as 10 & 26 spline. Can anyone tell me what the differences are between 10.5&11 and 10&26? Thanks again for the reply and info!!!

Assuming the transmission is the original B-W Super T-10, it has a 26-spline input shaft and used an 11" clutch; LuK and Centerforce II are both excellent replacements, with smooth engagement, great grip, and low pedal pressure.

For JohnZ, do you have any comments on the Centerforce I? I have a stock '78 L82 ST-10.

The Centerforce I is an excellent stock replacement, more than adequate for normal use. I used the II's on project cars that were going to be hammered-on regularly.
