Alright, so it's not exactly a corvette question. As I search for parts online I find many that carry the disclamer that they have no EGR hookup. I can't figure out what this means. If anyone knows what EGR means I would appreciate an explenation.

Exhaust Gas Recirculation - In a nutshell....recirculates exhaust gases through the combustion chamber for emission purposes.

Dave

EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. It allows exhaust gases into the air/fuel mixture in attempt to reduce the amount of oxides of nitrogen. Basically, trying to clean up the exhaust gasses. Hope this helps!

So, Will this cause a problem in my 78 when i rebuild it with non egr parts. Or will it just make my car non emission compliant, which doesn't matter because i live in Fl where emissions testing isn't required. Yet.

i just elimated my EGR system when I installed my edelbrock 2101 manifold. Car runs fine,no problems whatso ever.

Dave

Will i get some sort of error light or check engine light when i get rid of the emissions stuff. I have never run my car so i'm not real sure what to expect. When i got it it had not run in 10 years and i opted to rebuild the whole engine instead of risking blowing the thing up.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Tom

No, you should not have any problems. There were no computer in 78 year models. And no Check Engine Lights. The only worry would be passing emmisions, but that should not be an issue where you live.

Bill

Just out of curiosity, does EGR have any effect on performance?

The primary function of EGR is to cool the cylinder. If you change the intake to a non EGR it will work fine as long as you change the carb also. They are configured together. If all you did was eliminate the EGR you would run too lean and create a spark knock or pinging condition. Hope this helps.:cool :cool

I installed an Edelbrock 2101 and I am using my original carb with absolutely no pinging or any other problems.

Dave

EGR simply dilutes the intake charge somewhat under certain conditions to reduce peak combustion temperature, which reduces NOX. Your current carb will work fine.

During closed-loop, the computer advances spark timing during EGR to compensate for slower burning of the air-fuel mix. No EGR - Under part throttle conditions you may experience knock and waste fuel. Computer shuts off EGR during high performance conditions, idle and cold operation anyhow.

Computer? Closed loop? Not in (most) C3's... :)

Joe

Ok, oops he has a 78. But he did say it wasn't exactly a Corvette question, didn't he?

Yeah, I know - just razzing ya! :)
