Hey fellas, I am currently residing in California which most people know is the strictist emissions state. First off I have a California 80 which means that is has the first computer to regulate fuel/air mixture and timing. I will be moving to a much less strict state in the near future:s
I wanted some advice for a top end modification.I curently have a feedback carb and very restrictive heads. My engine itself has been rebuilt.I`m looking for a combination of carb, heads and intake manifold that will work together to get max streetable horspower and torque.
Also is it possible to remove the computer so that I don`t get a check engine light.
Thanks BBF.

What`s the best top end Combination?
GMC 14-71 blower, 3-stage fuel-injection (preferrably nitro-methane), aluminum Hemi-heads.....;shrug

I'd think it'd be fairly easy to dis-connect/remove the computer/'CHECK ENGINE' light once safely out of the Peoples Republic of Collie-FUHN-ya.
You might wanna consider one of the kits by Edelbrock (heads, cam, carb, intake), or other vendors.
350 'streetable' HP is well with-in reach.....
AND, you won't need 33" x 17" GOODYEAR EAGLE Dragway Specials this way, either.....

You can't go wrong with a matched kit like Edelbrock. There are numerous combos out there. Once you exit the state of California, your options are wide open. I went the poor mans special and purchased rebuilt chevy vortec heads. The machine shop rebuilt them with high performance components. I paid $400/pair including rockers and valve covers. Then ebay for the brand new carb and summit racing for the edelbrock intake. Heck you may be able to find a new in box edelbrock or holley upper end combo on ebay! In case you can't tell, I love ebay.

Also, loose the Cali 305 for a 350. Then loose the mechanical clutch and fan for an electric. For $100.00 I picked up about 15hp and 12lb-ft of torque installing a used electric fan. I also increased my gas mileage and was able to remove the fan shroud which allows me more room to work on the engine. Best $100 I have ever spent on the vette.

Thanks for the responses fellas,I have already replaced the 305 with a 350.I also have a 700R4 Tranny in for the TH350.Edelbrock was the first place I considered, although one Corvette shop recommended a Holly Carb. One Question how big of a carb should I run.600 cfm or 650 cfm?I don`t want to run too rich.
The electric fan is something I`ve been hearing alot about recently and I am very interested in trying it. I don`t know the exact specs of my cam though I believe it to be a little for aggresive than stock.
Thanks
BBF

I had a 'mild' 350 in my '79 Z28; 9.25:1 cr, .450"/288*/224* @ .050 hyd cam, dual-plane intake, headers, etc.
Ran 14.40s @ 97 MPH with 3.42s on 225/70R15 Uniroyals with a 650 dbl pump Holley shifting at 5500 RPM.
Now has a 355", 10.3:1 cr, .501"/292*/244* @ .050" cam, Victor Jr., same headers, 8"/4000 RPM converter.
Runs 12.80s @ 106 with 4.10s on 28" x 10" slicks with a 750 dbl pump Holley shifting @ 5800 RPM.

If you car will be 'street-only', never sees the strip, might wanna keep the belt-driven fan (it IS reliable), and 'add' an electric fan, for when caught in traffic.....

the heads you have now may be able to be boosted up.my 75 has a set of 882 castings,2.02intake /1.65 exh. valves.they are gasket matched, bowels blended, ported and polished.
it has a 460 lift cam, weiand excellerator single plane intake, topped off with a holley 680 double pumper with vaccum secondaries.
this setup is not for the 1/4 mile, but could be with a diffrent rear end.my rear end is 3/73 gear ratio.
there is a reason these cars are registered for 160 m.p.h.thats why i went single plane. the loss of bottom end torque is more than made up for on the top end with the single plane.
do you want it fast, or do you just like to squeal the tires???If its the second , go with a dual plane and a 4/11 rear end.
remember, its your baby, do what YOU like.mike

Mike:
Just outta curiousity, I've tried BOTH the 'earlier' dual-plane intake (327"/365 HP from a mid-'60s Vette), AND the Victor Jr. on the current 12.80-combination.
My Z28 runs with-in .02 in the 60', and .05 in the 1/4-mile, which is so insignificant, it coulda been due to better track prep, better air, etc.
Most engine builders believe the Victor Jr. gives up almost NO bottom-end, while providing a good top-end charge....
