I took all the anti-pollution stuff off. Stock 190hp engine in my '81 vette. Looking for some quick and cheap hp upgrades. Maybe that will satisfy my need for speed before I go and spend too much on an engine and find out I won't be able to drive it anywhere.

It's out of the car, intake and heads off. Ready for a simple rebuild. Including new intake, get rid of most of those attractive vacuum hoses, and carb.

I haven't had a chance to check any internal parts. If cam, crank, pistons, cylinders are rough I'll get a crate motor. Too much work to save what would probably be just a couple of hundred dollars at most.

I'm guessing I could gain 25hp-35hp from simple removal of smog stuff and intake replacement. Maybe the same for torque. What do you think?

Just removing the the air pump and egr will gain you maybe 10-15 hp at best. The single cat convertor is by far the biggest restriction to more power. True duals, headers, high flow cats, or no cat will gain you about 20-30 more ponies. Larger heads will help strain out a few more.

Just get a crate engine and make the suggested changes to the exhaust so it can breathe!

I replaced my original L48 (a CA emissions w/ approx. 165hp) with a GM crate engine, basic at 250hp. We also had removed the smog equipment and installed dual chambered exhaust. Kenny believes we are at about 300hp and the torque was greatly improved with the exhaust change.
