Can any one tell me the name of the part that fits this description: In an L-79 '66 vette, a small black cylinder adjacent to the coil standing 1 1/2" high? Should it have a wire coming out of the top which connects to the coil?

Sounds like a noise suppression capacitor for radio reception...........but keep in mind I just came in from six hours in the garage and I'm tired and stupid. :Silly

You can't post a pic of it could you??

Hey Bob I just wish I was tired and not so stupid sometimes...:L :L Dave..

Dave, I'm not sure how to post a pic, but I could e-mail one to you.

That sounds like a condensor, it acts like a capacitor, storing a charge when the points are open and allows for a hotter discharge when the points close. It is normally connected to the distributor side of the coil. Most coils don't work very well without one.

Pete.

Pete, it is on the opposite side of the distributor, right next to the coil.

Check inside your distributor and find out if there is a condensor connected to the points. If so, then it probably is a noise suppression capacitor for your radio.

I wish you had a picture too.

I agree with 67Heaven.

It is a capacitor that is part of the system to reduce ignition noise in the radio. The system is required because of the fiberglass body (why I have no idea). The wire attaches to the positive terminal on the coil.

It is shown in the LIC catalog as part number 53-3A (see link below). It has nothing to do with the condenser in the distributor.
