I'm kind of wondering about this myself and a few other questions...

Brands that I've heard of are: TPIS and Lingenfelter

Which is better? Don't know. I'm sure there are other brands out there, too.

Other question to add here:

What are the different things to consider for emmissions?
What are the things to consider on attaching longtube headers? Any other extra parts needed? Do you need to remove engine parts (permanently) to make them connect correctly?

Early in the morning and I may not be thinking straight, so I appologize if my questions are incoherent. :bang

My experience with TPIS headers has been excellanat. They dropped right in and came with the "Y" pipe . Connection was a breeze. Also they come with all the smog hookups. The quality is great. I bought the coated ones.

You need to find out what the restrictions are in your state. California for instance you cannot do any thing to the exhaust. Oh TPIS headers will bolt rite up to your car they have all the provisions on them

Ok, another question:

Assuming a person has already added an after market 3" exhaust to their LT1/4 Vette...
What is the HP gain (approximate range) for adding $750 TPIS headers to the after market 3" exhaust system?

Trying the factor in the "bang for the buck" aspect.

10 to 15 hp But you should have headers if you plan to do other mods here is what I have. A LT4 with a Hot Cam, Corsa cat back, TPIS headers, open airbox and adjustable fuel pressure regulator. This combination of mods gave me about 409 hp at the crank witch is about a 79 hp gain. So if you install a Hot cam with out headers you may only get 25 hp but if already have headers your gain may be 35 hp same with the exhaust. If planed correctly mods are supposed to compliment each other. My goal was 400+ hp and I got it so I am happy. I got the car last year First thing I did was new exhaust this spring was headers and cam next year maby 410 gears. Put a little plan together and a hp goal and go for it.

I'm sorry, I kind of knew that with a new 3" exhaust that it would need a new type of header to fit on the exhaust. (Would a stock manifold fit a 3" exhaust?) So, I was assuming a "shorty" type of header would be replaced.

So, I guess my guess revolves around the old "shorty" vs long-tube. Is it feasable to gain 10 to 15 HP from a long-tube header setup over an aftermarket "shorty" header setup?

Thanks again for the help and info redvette!

ps - that is what I'm trying to do is setup a solid plan of attack for more HP! :lou

Get long tubes if your state permits them. Shortys are a wast of money very little hp gain long tubes will net you more hp now and down the road if you are planing more mods

Perhaps TPIS has found a better outsource since I bought mine. I had to get rid of the weld bead inside each tube, bend the vent tube for valve cover clearance and die grind the bolt sleeves for alignment (a day's work in all) before the fit and function were acceptable. On the other hand, have you ever seen a set of melrose headers? Extrude honed and BEE-U-TIFULLLL. The Z is gettin' some of those babys! Don't know if they make 'em for the LT4 but you might look.
