Where do I find the block ID?

Welcome to CAC bigfish!

The block casting numbers are found on the flange of the block just above the bellhousing. Most of them are on the driver's side of the block, but some have them on the passenger side. This number will show you what the block was cast for, such as passenger high performance, or truck etc...

The block ID number which includes a partial of the VIN number are found on the deck just in front of the head on the passenger side. This number is what is referred to for "Numbers Matching" the car.

Hope this helps!

Bill

On the back by the bellhousing you should also see numbers for the date the block was cast. I think the casting # you should see will be 3970010. If it is that it's a pretty common casting #. The date should be shortly before your car was made.

The numbers on the front stamp pad are just below the back of the alternator where the head meets the block. You should see the last 6 digits of the VIN and also a 3 letter code like CML or something close. The 3 letters identify what the engine was to be installed in. (CML is a camaro suffix)

Hope that helps

THanks guys. Got 1 out or 2 and it started raining. 6.30 AM here and my wimpy girlfriend feels it is more important to go to work than to make sure I have the original engine in my first Vette.

The block ID is correct (3970010) but I need to get back and check the rest of the numbers.

Thanks for helping a newbie!

One more quick question ... is the 3970010 block ID unique to the 76 Stingray?

Nope, that block casting was used from 69 through 80 in Vettes and all kinds of other GM products. A VERY common block.

tom...

There should be a stamping on the front of the block near the head with a stamping including a partial Vin. If this is correct, you have the original block that your car was built with.

You found the casting number - the casting date is in the same area on the passenger side of the block. You'll find two different stampings on the block pad in front of the pass. side cylinder head; one will start with a "V" followed by four numbers and three letters (engine plant date/type code), and the other one will be a smaller font starting with "1 S 6" followed by the same six digits as the last six on the VIN plate on your windshield pillar and title. Post the casting date and the front pad stamp information and we'll decode it for you.

Finally!

VO903CKX
16S403096

403096 matched the VIN so I have an original engine (if that is good).

Next, the metal plate in the door jam is painted over. Now I am suppose to look at the metal plate by the hinges. Correct? If it is in the area but the back of the door it is not there.

That information will be the matching VIN and color information? Correct?

Apparently running a business is severely getting in the way of my new car!

Thanks

Arthur

The "trim tag" is a stainless steel plate riveted to the front face of the door inner panel just above the upper hinge; it has the exterior paint color, interior trim color/type code, and the car's body build date code. Doesn't have the VIN on it.
