Where should a buyer take the car to get checked out?

This is my first post---hope this is the right place to ask whether a Chevy dealer or specialty Vette shop is better to have a potential purchase mechanically checked out? I heard somewhere a tip about getting a record of any dealer service from any other dealer based on the VIN. Did I get that right?

And if I may be so lucky, does anyone have a suggested dealer or specialty shop in the Seattle area?

wolfarms,
welcome to the CAC.
As for the dealer or a vette shop, I think it would really depend on which one has the best reputation. Do you know any vette owners in the area who could recommend a place? If not, you might try posting a question along those lines in the Pacific Northwest sub forum (click here).
If the car has been serviced at the dealer, it should show pretty exhaustive information about prior service history. Mine does.

Hi Tammy,

Thank you for your great tip. I posted a similar request there. It seems like a pretty quiet forum, but, hey, Seattle is not LA. So much to learn, so little time...

Mike,

Thanks for your gracious offer for help with a particular C5. Since my first post I now have in hand the car buying check list from the Education section of this forum, details on how to interogate the car's computer to get status of most systems from a post on this forum, and if you have a nifty means of getting service records, I am all ears! I am getting closer to being confident I know how to search for a good buy.

Being new to the forum I thought it might be interesting to give a shot at using the private message feature of this website to contact you about a particular car. It seemed to work, so my message should be in your inbox. Thanks again, Fred.

Damn JAGSFAN, that's awfully nice of you to go out of your way to help someone else out after the day you've had. DAMN NICE! I hope everything works out for you. -John

Mike, I just read the entire thread about the accident. Not only do I feel your frustrations, I am amazed how suportive the forum is! And, of course if you have no time checking out the VIN I sent you via a PM, I can understand! Good Luck!

what about buying a used vette? would it be better to buy a vette from a dealer or from a vette specialist? is it the same idea of who ever has the better reputation?
