The '86 has been running great, but I am having a little problem as of lately and it is driving me up the wall!!!!!When I am in overdrive and get on the gas{not enough to downshift} it will cut out and studder. It will also do it a little when I am getting on the pedal in drive.I have replaced the distributor cap and rotary button. The plugs are about 4 months old.Besides the plug wires, what else could cause this???I am getting no codes either!I also notice after I punch it I get a gas smell.I have long suspected that my injectors are getting to that dreadful point, but would failing injectors give a gas smell? Thanks in advance..again!

Change your fuel filter. If that doesn't work, think about the pump next :beer

I would run two bottles of chevron Techron in one tank. Paul (c4c5specialist) reccomends this for dirty injectors. Granted it wont make them brand new. It is a good place to start for ten dollars. i would then do what moonunit suggested. That is a very good suggestion. I hope your problems will soon be solved.

Good Luck
Craig

i had just changed the fuel pump about 2 weeks ago,but today it was obvious that it has already gone bad for whatever reason.i turned on the ignition earlier today and heard the pump make a pretty awful sound so i guess i'll be digging in the tank tomorrow.thanks for the replies.

Shudder in 'overdrive'

I've had 3 GM cars (none Corvettes though) that did this, sometimes violently at 45-55mph. All 3 cars repaired with new plug wires. The first one cost me $102 extra since the dealer diagnosed it. After that, I just changed them out when the similar symptom appeared.
Hope this helps.

I guess you learn by doing, and 102 dollars extra will make you learn in a hurry.

Are the injectors the original ones? It's possible that it could be the injectors. There are many places that can clean those injectors for you and get them running pretty efficiently. If the injectors are original, they deserve to get that treatment. :D

i found the problem. it was the fuel pump. had just replaced it and then after 3 weeks it's time for another one!! i saw an advertisement at the chevy dealer for injector cleaning and was thinking about having that done. has anyone else done this? now with that in mind..... i have also read bulletins that said you are not supposed to clean injectors on the '86 models.

I think it would be better to take the injectors out and send them in to be cleaned and flow tested. I don't think they do that for you at the dealership. TPIS does it; as well as Cruzin Performance in Michigan:

www.tpis.com
www.cruzinperformance.com

Read the Cruzin Performance website, they go through it step by step on the site and provide you with a flow test chart.

TPIS is $15 an injector while IIRC, Cruzin Performance is $12 an injector.
