If the conditions of the two cars were equal including condition and matching #'s, which would you consider to be the most desirable car to own, a 1968 L71 convertible or a 1966 L79 convertible? And, why?

That would all depend on your personal taste. Both are excellent cars.

If you're wishing to get the most attention from car and non-car buffs alike the C2 is probably the way to go, since you see less of them on the street versus the C3.

The L71 engine option is a very nice motor in my opinion. I'd love to have one.

You didn't say if price was the same for both. I have seen both go for about the same amount of money.

Tough call. I have a C2 already, so I would say the C3. If I didn't have a C2 already I would probably pick it over the C3.

If I had my C2 for x amount of years I might be willing to trade for the C3, if I couldn't afford both.

Just my 2cents.

Doug

Sorry but what is an L71 ? motor

I would take the midyear, as the shark styling is just not to my liking. I remember when I was about 12 years old and I saw my first midyear Corvette. I thought that it was just about the coolest thing that I had ever seen. When the 1969 Corvette came out, I thought that they had absolutely ruined the Corvette. I have since come to appreciate the sharks, but the midyears still rank higher on the coolness scale. The sharks seem a bit cartoonish to me. Just my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions...

The big block would be pretty tempting, however.

In terms of collectability

I would think the 68 (first year of the new body style) would be a cooler car to own.especially a Big Block with tri power.I really feel the C2's are at the top of there pricing scale now.(will still appreceate) But not like the giant spike we have seen over the last 6 years or so .

I feel the Special/rare sharks are coming into there pricing spikes soon and it would be foolish not to purchase one of these cars at the bargin prices they are going for now.

For sure when I am done with my latest project the next car I will be looking for is a 74 convertable with a big block (just a low milage virgin).

This is an intersting subject. As a C1 owner in my early 30s I have found that the "right" corvette for any individual is a strong function of their age. For me a C3 is the right choice and a C1 is even better. A C2 is old but not old enough to be interesting. I have found that the 45-55 crowd tend to like the C2s. The 62+ crowd tend to like the C1. The 68-72 C3s are apealing to those that do not have issues with the 70s.

Wow! How's that for Holmesian-like deducing. I am in the 45 - 55 crowd and I have a C2. It is my favorite. But I also have a C4 and it ain't too shabby either.

But, as to the subject, I'd advise you to check the post from the guy referencing Automobile Magazine's Top 100. C2 wins. As for the 68, all I can tell you is that it is somewhat of a bastard year, in that many of the parts for that model were unique to that year. Also, the BB 68 had a real tendency to broil your feet due to the lack of insulation. I autocrossed a 68 BB for a buddy in Florida in the mid 70's and I couldn't wait to finish so I could get out of that car and back into my 67 vert.

Just MOHO, but I'd have to go with the 66 L79.

I like the Shark but I love the Midyear. :beer

I would choose the Midyear, I have always loved them since first having a ride in one back in High School. A buddys Dad bought a 396-425 with 4:56 rear and Sidepipes. The Buddy recieved a 67 390 HP for Graduation or Birthday (too long ago to be sure which,) and I bought a 60 shortly out of HS; but have never owned a midyear and probably never will unless its in pieces:L

Intersesting theory. i"d have to concur . I have to bypass the c2 aspect. I remember seeing them when they came out in the 60's as a little kid. I still get a whiplash when I spot one on the road.

My personal preference is the mid-year. Don't get me wrong the shark is nice but having visited pro-team sales my eyes just kept going back to the mid-year!

I said the secret word? Yeah!!! :L

Mac,

You just used the password phrase. ;LOL You get the key on the 25th. :D

The 68 had a lot of bugs in it that were solved in 69 and 70 - heck it's not even a Stingray. The 66 has more headroom and more shoulder room. Of course if it will be a TQ, none of that matters.

All your comments and opinions have merit. However, what about the uniqueness of each car? Isn't the C3 a rarer automobile in this case? Wouldn't that affect your desire to own the car over the C2?

Always wanted a midyear, but always thought that I'd "settle" for a C3 if it had a 427, or LT-1 option. Since I have the LT-1, I gotta go for the midyear. I'd go for it regardless.

I had a '71 Sunflower LT-1 Convertible. A very nice car!!

I have owned 2 C2's and 1 C3......I'd go with the C2.....no matter what engine. :beer
