Which gears are better for killing!

I am going to get new gears in my A4. Which do you guys think will be the best for street and strip racing.

I'd go with 3.42. Unless you get some wider wheels and tires, you're going to traction problems as it is with the 3.42 gears.

3.42 to 3.73's is only about .10 difference in ET in a 1/4 mile.

i like the 3.42's i put them in my 82 Z/28 and they really get out of the hole compared to the 2.73's. lose about 10 mph or so though. before i switched it wouldn't wind past 4800 rpm aftwards it would wind past 6500 in drive if i wanted too.

3.73s are probably the best all around street/strip gear you can get, but it seems lots of C5s are pulling good times w/ the 3.42s. I still believe LPE is using the 3.42s in the TT 427, and thats pulling 8.95s!!!

This is the first post I've read about losing top end speed with the 3:42 gears.
I'm considering changing out the stock 2:73 and everyone has said go with the 3:42 over the 3:15. But no one has said anything about losing 10 mph.
Wouldn't be a problem anyway if top end speed is over 170 mph.
I don't plan on ever trying to prove that one.

The loss of 10mph is theoretical (sp) not actual.

The 3:42 are excellent choice. Go for it with a superyank 3500 convertor and 1.6 str and you will be very pleased.

I drove a 99 C5 convertible with this and it drove as normal as a lexus LS400. The only thing is that the upshifts were so smooth it was very different than my powerloaded A4 99 C5...

Many of the guys that went with this 3500 yank 1.6 str and the 3:42's have installed transgo shift kits to get that harder upshift feel.

If you want velvet smooth...forgo the shift kit..as without one I could'nt even tell the tranny upshifted..other than the very fast movement upward of the speedometer..

I do hear the people love the firmer shifts of the transgo though..

So that would be the decision to consider when doing the gear swap..
