I did a search first and couldn't find the answer. I'm sure this isn't the first time this has been asked.

When I bought my 71 it only had one key. It doesn't fit in the alarm keyhole in the back nor the spare tire lock.

My question is should it? If not were there separate keys for the alarm, doors/ingition, and spare?

There's no spare in the back so I think I can get the lock off without breaking it. Once I know the right kind of keys my plan would be to get keys made for the existing locks.

Thanks in advance.

hello, on my 74, the door key and alarm key are the same.i am not lucky enough to have a spare tire lock also.

For 71 the door and ignition are on one key, the square headed one. Then there was the round headed one for the alarm and the storage compartment. This continued throught 73. Then in 74 they seperated the door and ignition key so that the square one only worked the ignition and the door moved over to the round key.

Tom,

Thanks. So somewhere in the world is a round key to my alarm and storage compartment. Was the round key for the spare as well?

I've got the original owner's phone number so I'll give him a call but I doubt he has it if he didn't put it in the package that came with the car.

Am not sure. On the later cars it is, but early cars used a Briggs&Stratton type of key for the spare. I am not sure when the B&S key was phased out.

Any good locksmith can make you a correct key for your alarm/storage compartment. Just pull out the storage compartment latch and take it to the locksmith.

Well, got the answer to my question today. It's one oval key for the Storage Compartment, Alarm, and Spare Tire Lock. If you make a key for the storage only it won't do the alarm or spare. Same for the spare. However, once you make the storage, and spare key it's two more cuts to make the alarm key. The alarm key opens all three.

Thanks for your help everyone. For $25 at the locksmith today I'm all set. Certainly better than the $40-50 a piece for the locks and rekeys. The even better news is now I have the key codes so if I want to order the factory originals I know what I need to order.
