I was originally going to start with the carb and work my way down and out but wouldn't it be better to do it the opposite way so that everything matches. I would like to put in a side exhaust or maybe just an undercar dual chambered exhaust. What are your thaughts?

Go chambered!

I did last November and I LOVE IT!
I can't get enough of driving and listening to it. Idle is nice and any acceleration is sweet music to my ears!

As far as mods go...my own personal opinion is that you can't do much one piece at a time, you would really need to make changes that all mesh together, at the same time, otherwise it will be mis-matched and not give you the results you are looking for. Cam, heads, intake and carb should all work well together and be balanced with each other for optimum performance.

Now, the chambered exhaust has given my engine more room to breath and I have noticed performance differences (for the better), too.

Both chambered & stock type side pipes are restrictive. Many like them & are happy w/ mild setups. Header sidepipes are better than stock type. Less restrictive mufflers rec. for them.

Ex. is first if your ex. is stock single. See Why Exhaust is problem for HP on 75-81
what many refer to as my Exhaust topic.
