hi, i'm thinking of going from auto to manual trans. i have searched the archives. i'm not sure what i want or need. car is not or will ever be raced. basically a cruising car. probably will take a few long trips. what i don't know is why would i want a five spd over the 4spd? thanks for the help

The 5 or 6 speed trany have an overdrive, where the 4 speeds don't. The overdrive saves gas and RPMs on the engine and the rest of the drive train. They will cost more to put in, but the drivablity is increased. That is the main reason for going to the 5 or 6 speed. THE OVERDRIVE.

Road trips = Need for OD.. Get the ROD 6 speed or Tremec 5 or 6 speed. All have OD.

I put in a Tremec TKO from http://www.fortesparts.com/ 3 years ago and have not regreted it the first gear is lower making the acceleration better and I cruise at about 1500/1600 rpm at highway speeds

You want a 5 speed for the overdrive. Cruising at 2000 RPM @70 is a lot better than cruising at 3000 RPM at the same speed.

I'd suggest the Tremec 3550. The TKO is really just a higher rated version of this tranny. I think the 3550 is only rated at 450 torque, and will be about $200 cheaper than a TKO.

The Richmond 6 is quite a bit more (about $1000) than either of the Tremec 5 speeds. It still only gives 1 overdrive, but has closer ratios in the others since it has 5 non-OD gears instead of the normal 4.

The Tremec T-56 is a 6 speed which has 2 OD gears. Again, pricey when compared to the 3550 & TKO and IMHO gives you no benifet (1 OD is plenty).

If you really want to save money and don't mind the possibility of rebuilding the tranny, you could probably get away with using a Tremec T-5 out of a '88 or so F-body. These can be had for cheap, but make sure you get the stronger (or should I say less weak) one. I'm also assuming you do not have a BB as it could make short work of killing this tranny. If you chose this route, be sure to do your homework.

Hi I,m located in se pa , I am currently replacing my 700r in my vette with a tremec . If I can be any help drop me an email ,,,,,,,

George:

if the car will NEVER be raced;
highway-mileage is the biggest concern;
the driver wouldn't 'object' to the wide ratios of the 700R4;
driver doesn't 'object' to an automatic;
and cost was an issue...
wouldn't dropping a 700R4 or a 200-4r into an earlier C3 be easier and cheaper?

A buddy I know is pondering a similar swap, and has no preference between auto or stick.
Thanks!!!

there is a chevy truck 4-speed with overdrive that will bolt right in you have to fabricate the linkage for one of the shift levers though.

Pick up a copy of the latest April 04 edition of Car Craft magazine. Good story about the 5 speed OD options out there and which ones work best. The following story is "How to Bolt a Tremec 5-speed in an Early Camaro." The story lays everything out for you regarding 5-speed OD options.

bossvette, which truck tranny is abolt on. Will it hold up? I don't know a whole lot about engines and stuff thats why i'm looking for suggestions. it does need to be manual and someone else had suggested a hydraulic clutch.

the trans is early 80's it is a manual overdrive with 4 speeds there is a guy in our local club that has one behind a mild 454 for some time now suburbans had them and possibly others check with your local bone-yard. you can mount a Hurst 4-speed shifter but have to modify the linkage, supposedly no big deal
