Which way?- fuel pump strainer

I have a 1995. What is the correct orientation of the strainer? The factory manual shows it pointing left/ right. I tried installing it with the long part facing the rear, but it seems to crush it when I set the sending unit on the mounting flange.

left and right...thats the way I put mine in last week and it worked fine
