Oh forgot to mention this in my clutch thread but I'd like it to lead into some advice for a mod/repair.

When I went to work on my car I noticed a puddle of fluid coming from under the drivers side headlight.

I poped the hood and the only thing thats there is my horn for my alarm and this ball! This ball seems to be part of the pollution control. So I stuck my fingers in the puddle...sniff,sniff Hmmm tasted a dab of it GAS!!!! WTH!

Its a watered down substance with the taste and smell of GAS. I am angry! But this may just lead to what I wanted to do before and thats to DITCH the pollution control not for performance but just easier access under the hood!

Now ive seem ALOT of Vettes here with custom engines and such and I need to know how to eliminate this system.

1. Please include some instruction
2. Will this hurt my performance/fuel mileage with the ECM
3. Is there a pulley bracket to make up the extra slack in the belt

Please guys of all the systems in this car this is one I DO NOT want to learn about. I understand the engine very well I understand the electronics and most everything fairly well but this thing seriously has got to go.

And I do not care about emissions (Until Kyoto reigns that is)

Ive been doing about of research and when money permits Im going to Side Effects exhaust system and will be pulling the motor for a complete change out but this Id like to address fairly soon!

The cannister you talk of is filled with charchol for filtering the fumes from the tank. As far as I know it is a high mileage change out item somewhere around 30k-50k. it is not that expensive an item to replace...
 
Big red.....you can remove all of your smog equipment . It is not computor controlled. The ball is a vacuum canister and the round cylinder next to it is your charcoal canister. This part you will want to retain. Its part of your return fuel vapor extractor and is part of the PCV. The air pump and ALL the lines and hoses and switches can be unpluged. Buy the air pump replacement pulley kit. It works very well and is quality piece. It will allow you to continue the use of your stock belt setup. Remove the hoses and check valves from the exhaust manifolds and cap them or cut of the tubes and weld them shut. The air pump pulley kit is sold by Mid America $169.99 polished or black anodized. BTW , your charcoal can might need replacing if its leaking.
 
Cool, another question then. Is my car going to smoke out the exhaust if I do this?
 
I have heard before that the charcoal canister should only collect gas vapors, and if there is actual gas in it, there is a problem with the system.... anyone heard of this before?
 
If there is actual gas in it, that means that.... well.... gas is getting in it, and that should not be.

However, any condensation coming from the canister will have a slight gas smell/taste. (kinda like watery gas)

I've had C2,C3, and now C4 96 LT4 -----I have to re-learn everything over again,

Good luck on the repairs---I also have leak up front-middle-oil--not sure where it's coming from.:s
 
Cool so I can start planning the Canadian ChainSaw Massacre on my funny looking smog setup Cool. Question why do I have to keep any of the canisters I can't just bypass them?
 
The canister is part of the Evaporative Emission Control System (EECS) It traps and stores fuel vaporors evaporate from the fuel tank, throttle body and intake manifold. It consists of charcoal filled canister and the lines connecting the the canister to the fuel tank, ported vacuum and intake manifold vacuum. When the engine is not running it stores the vapor from all 3 places. When the engine is running, the fuel vapors are purged from the canister by intake air flow and consumed in the normal combustion process. It draws off the same line with the PCV. I think it is best to leave it operable . It is neither a hindrance nor an advantange when it comes to performance. There is a line that comes from the tank to the canister or vise versa.
 
Oh I see now. So this cannister really has nothing to do with the emissions systems (Smog pump etc..) Perfect!. Also it sounds like something I want to leave alone anyways Im sure they connected vacuum line and lines from the tank for a reason!
