Simple question, actually: what's the reason behind angle plug heads? I often see parts listed as "will not fit angle plug heads," so there is obviously a disadvantage to them. What's the advantage?

As I recall, when they we introduced the magizine guys said it was to get better flame travel. I don't know of any conclusive studies done to prove the value of angle plug heads. I doubt that you or I could feel a seat of the pants differance. Maybe a NASCAR team or national level small block drag racer would see them as worthwhile. Shoot, I'm happy when none of my 8 spark plugs are fouled and don't care where they point!

The advantage is mainly seen when using domed pistons, as the angled plug directs the flame front more effectively for use with a dome. They make little difference when using flat or dished pistons.

Header clearance also can be easier with angled plug heads.

If you index the plugs (non-angle type heads) you get almost as much advantage as provided by the angle plug heads. The idea is to present the spark to the intake valve to give the flame front a more complete burn across the top of the piston thus more power. At least that's what the Big boys tell me.;shrug
