1996 Collector's Edition LT4
Hey, Im a new corvette owner and new to the forum. I just purchased a 1996 Collector's Edition LT4 with 22,700 miles. It has both tops, two sets of wheels, the originals and some ZR-1 style crome (which are on the car now). It also has the black interior with the select ride control. Its a great car and very clean. I have a couple of questions though. First, it seems like the push button controls for the climate control seem to not work sometimes. Basically when you push the button for temp, auto, defrost, nothing happens, also the temp (up and down) don't seem to work either at that time. But if a tap the buttons a little harder, then everthing starts working. I'm wondering if anybody else has seen or experienced this problem. Maybe its because of lack of use, I don't think the previous owners drove the car much in the last couple of years.

As for the title of the thread, I was just curious if other CE LT4 owners have noticed that there seems to be a lot of these cars forsale. Since there really wasn't that many made you wouldn't think there would be that many out there forsale, but I see them forsale everywhere. Maybe I'm just sensitive since I own one now.

Great Forum, everybody keep it up.

I would mark it up to the c6 introduction. All c4s and alot of c5s will be for sale soon.

My CE/LT4 temp controls also seem to occassionally have a mind of their own. I haven't been able to find out any common cause. Punching them harder doesn' seem to be the remedy. Rather just fiddling around with different buttons seems to "unfreeze" them. If you find the real cause, please post.

thanks,

Welcome! The CE is a beautiful car.

The ‘94 I had had the same affliction with the climate control buttons.

I looked into it and found it was the head that would need to be replaced. A remanufactured head unit is available through Chevy dealers. If you turn in your head unit, you will receive a discount (core charge).

I, don’t have the part number, but it was available at the parts department.

One suggestion... if you decide to purchase through a Chevy dealer, shop around! I found one for $175.00. On the high side, dealers were quoting me up to $225.00 for the same exact part.

You may also be able to remove the climate control head and clean the contacts.

IMHO, CE LT4’s on the block may coincide with the 400 hp C6 debuting. The people that originally purchased LT4’s like a little extra go-go under the hood; how is one to resist 400 hp on the “entry” level car.

There are a couple of factors to the CE's for sale. First off, C5's are going for bargain prices right now. I can buy a new Convertible for 13 grand off sticker. For me, that is a deal that is tough to walk away from... I may be trading in my 1996 CE for a new 2004 CE.

So, there are shifts going on in the Corvette market. People with late C4's are moving to C5's or C6's. Some of the C5 guys are moving up to C6's as well... and some other people are getting in to Corvettes, or moving up from an older 'Vette.

It is a good time to buy, because prices are LOW!

Probably the hvac controller under the dash (or a vacuum leak under the hood or dash)

Mine was the controller (elec one side vac the other side). Replaced it & all's perfect now.

I've toyed with the idea of selling my CE, but it has nothing to do with the later model Corvettes.

I've had my CE for a little over a year now, and am getting to the point where I want to start modifying it. But I hate to modify it, 'cause it seems that a CE should stay stock, if you know what I mean. If I weld in a roll bar, and swap out the seats for some light-weight road-racing units, it would take away from the "Collector Edition-ness" of the car.

Afraid I can't help with the HVAC controls problem.

If you need a control unit,I have one that I need to sell.By the way, very nice choice of cars!
