Why the side-tubes are off.

The sidetubes are off because Z28Canuck, Fuelie and I are fabricating a set of inserts that weigh less than 1/2 of what the Hooker inserts weigh, and flow much better.

Other designs use 9 spirals per side. We decided to go with 7. Every ounce counts. :D

The inserts are done, but we have to drill some mounting holes in the empty tubes......maybe we'll get time to drill them tonight.

I've got over 160 miles on the car now, and can report that very few people would actually want a car like this.

Aside from the noise level (the radio is useless), there is no isolation from road feel........absolutely none! That is not a negative point to me....but to most people it would be. The Vette Brakes Performance Plus suspension feels very responsive and controllable. More spirited driving is required to finalize my opinion.

It will be very warm in the cockpit during July and August. Also, without power steering, it is very hard to turn those large front tires until it gets moving.

Frankly, I wouldn't want this car for a daily driver.

BUT, and that's a very big but, the car is everything I designed it to be. It's as close as possible to the racer days of old while being just civilized enough to live on the streets. And then there's that moment when you squeeze hard on the loud pedal.

C'mon Bowling Green.

Geeeeeeeeeeeeezzzzz...Tinker Tinker Tinker...Ain't that thing Loud enough..???:crazy

Sweet Bob!!! Wanna make me a set while you're at it? Do you actually drill holes through the side tube itself to secure those bad boys? Couldn't you just weld in a stop?

I love the pic in your signature. The angle is perfect to see the new wider fenders and d*am she looks awesome with them!
That is one mean, nasty, and tough looking car!! :beer
I don't think you really need the BB502 in there, just the looks alone have to be enough to intimidate anyone looking to try and have some fun with you on the street.

No. I want the inserts to be easily removable for intimidation purposes. ;) Also, they are not designed to completely seal against the inner tube walls. There will be blow-by which would also indicate rattling if not secured by mounting tabs.

And, in response to VNV........ "What? I can't hear you. What?" ;LOL

:D That's why I never put my inserts back in! :W

I think you should have supercharged that motor....then those few ounces wouldn't really matter....just a function of needing more HP!! HAHA!!!!

I am curious as to how those type of baffles work, do the spirials go all the way around? Having never seen one in the flesh I had assumed they were simular to a grain elevator and the exhaust gasses took a "spirial" path thru the system.

More pictures please.:confused

Craig,

The spirals are cut out flat and then hand-bent into position along the slit between centre hole and outside circumference. No spiral has any direct connection to its neighbour, but the gases will take the avenue of least resistance, resulting in a swirling direction around the inserts.

I see what appears to be a mounting bracket at each end of the baffle, but how are you attaching them so that they are easily removable and also so they do not rattle?

Charles

Bob,
Nice work you guys did..they look great...:BOW

Hmmmmm...wonder what a set of those with less baffles would sound like in my sidetubes?

Mine are held in place with a nut, bolt and lock washer...i imagine Bob will do the same..?

Everyone wants a car like that... but like you said, they just don't want it as a daily driver :)

I also plan to make a set of Spir** Tur** Baf**** . I would buy a set but the manufacturer wants a TON of money for a set for what you get. There's not much to them. A friend of mine has a set. I'm just waiting for the car to come apart to measure them up.

Yep. I'm happy going from place to place in my Z-71 Tahoe. Lots of comfort, impressive power, and go anywhere in any weather. It's my office on wheels.

But, when I need a little something............ start the countdown, run down the checklist, pull the pin, and :blow we've got ignition, Baby! :gap

P.S. Thanks 1Bad69 for loaning us your 9-spiral baffles. ;)

As 1Bad69 said, two small holes on the side-tubes (on the side closest to the rocker panels). They will be easy to remove because they will not be a snug fit. The bolts will, however, hold them securely in place, thus, no rattles.

When I said easily removable, I meant in comparison to the Hooker slip-ins which can be a bear to get out after time.

Yep. I ended up just getting new side tubes cause I couldn't get the slip-ins slipped out!

So to intimidate you are saying the tubes are going to Bowling Green empty :D

Thanks for giving in to all the curiousity you started, and nice fab job also.
