Will spoiler slow down Johnson?

When the checkered flag dropped at Bristol, it brought to a close the "wing era" in NASCAR. Beginning Sunday at Martinsville, the spoiler will return, replacing the wing on the rear of the Cup Series cars.

Of the 93 wing point races, three drivers won 10 or more races with one -- Jimmie Johnson -- dominating the field with 22 victories (Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards were the other two with 13 and 11, respectively).

With three wins in five starts this season, Johnson looks like he is more than ready to challenge for his fifth consecutive Cup championship, but will removing the wing and going back to a spoiler slow the No. 48 team down?

Mark Spoor and Bill Kimm have their thoughts. Read both sides of the argument and weigh in with your thoughts in the comments section below. Don't forget to vote for whose argument you agree with more in the poll at the right.

If it slows down JJ, it'll slow down the rest of the cars even more. Team 48 did a great job adapting to the new car and wing, I'll be surprised if they're not one of the quickest teams getting a handle on the spoiler coming back, guess we'll find out for sure in a couple of weeks. (after martinsville)

Johnson won 3 races as a rookie (the fewest number of races he's ever won) with a start-up team, 4 his 2nd season, and 8 in his 3rd, ALL pre ricer-wing era, so unless Fudge-Hammer France & his loonies make Johnson run with only 7 spark-plug wires, or a showroom stock Impala, he'll be just fine

" ... you ADAPT... you OVERCOME...

... you IMPROVISE!!!"

... and the 48 team does it better'n anybodyelse out there today

:thumbTrue!

The spoiler will change the driving characteristics of the car. Whether JJ and his crew can adapt to that change is yet to be seen. My guess is that he and crew will handle the differences just fine.

I doubt the spoiler will slow anyone down. In testing the drivers actually went faster with it. Most likely due to increased down force in the corners.
