Window gear strip repair

We have to change the long plastic gear strip in my brothers 86 . Has anyone done this . How bad is it ? Do you have to pull the entire assembly out ?

Mid America sells a kit with directions for doing this; they also sell kits to upgrade to the later style motors and lifters. It's $17.95 for the ribbon, part #284078. It says "Easy installation for a competent mechanic" which sounds to me like you have to pull the assembly out.

I did this on my '85 and it was not that easy. If I remember correctly there is a little pop rivet at the very end of the track. I popped that out to get the ribbon off and replaced it with a small nut and bolt. Just take your time......and try your best not to get aggravated. It's hard to move around in there.
