I have a batch of loose wires/pluds, etc. under my hood and am hoping someone with an L-81 might be able to tell me what they're hooked to. I suspect they may be involved with the emission/computer gear as this car was repowered and the emissions gear was not used.

Two of the plugs are six conductor plugs that appear to be male and female. They come from a wiring loom at the firewall a little right of center near the valve cover. With them is a smaller 2 conductor plug with a brown and a black with brown stripe wire.

Finally, there's a single wire (black with green stripe) that comes through the firewall from the fuse box (right side of box), comes through the loom and then terminates with a GM type plug just above the left front wheel well. There's a pic of this last one attached.

Any help or ideas?

Thanks,

Wires

Kelly, the 2 plugs up near the firewall sound to me like the ones that plug into the distributor, the connections from the old computer and I'm guessing your new setup doesn't use these.

I'm not sure about the other one, it looks a little like the MC solenoid test lead but mine is on the other side of the engine compartment and is plain green wire.

Good luck!

Chuck,

Thanks for the info. I had a feeling that they were all emissions related but I didn't wnt to eliminate anything that I might need later.

I've got a very messy engine compartment with dangling/disconnected wires and hoses and I'm trying to clean things up a bit.

Thanks again,

I was thinking that the single wire was for the optional oil temperature gauge; that replaced the analog clock when the cassette was ordered as their was a digital clock in the display.

I would have to look at my car tomorrow to be sure and will do so.

Lanny,

Hey I'd appreciate that. This Vette has oil pressure gage in the console cluster and I thought it was working. I've only had the car for about 50 miles worth of driving so I'm not sure. It also appears to me that the horn(s) have been yanked out (or not replaced) and I was hoping the one single wire (black w/green stripe) might be related to that.

Thanks in advance for all help!

My 81 was converted from a computer controled ignition to an 80 style HEI. I have the same wire, disconnected and turned back. It is not the oil temp gauge, or pressure as both of mine work. I have yet to find it on a wiring diagram either.

Lanny,

I finally found it in a Service Manual at a dealer....

It's labelled "idle stop" on the schematic and it appears (naturally) to run to the carb. I also had a chance to check out the other wires pictured earlier in this post and they do all in fact belong to emissions or computer wire looms.

I also discovered the tangled web of vacuum lines led back to a cannister behind the left wheel well and was told (off the record) that all of that mess could go too. Looks like I might be able to get to it from the bottom... that or the master cylinder will have to be seperated from the booster. Looks like a winter day project.

Thanks,

That is correct, it goes to the carb solenoid that raises the idle when the a/c is on. I disconnected mine when I changed carbs......duhhhhhh I must be getting old. My vapor recovery can is long gone bye bye too. I believe that you can get at it by removing the shark gills and work through the opening.

DDL,

Thanks for the idea on the vapor can removal. It didn't occur to me to try and get it out through the fin hole. I was looking at dropping it through the bottom but you might be on to something there.

Thanks,
