won't shut off

The past two weeks my '93 won't start on first try....just a click, then it starts. Sometimes it does it twice. Thought the starter was going bad. Sometimes it starts up with no problem. Yesterday it started but had a whiny sound also. Backed it out of the garage and shut it off....it would not shut off. After 5 minutes it shut off by itself. Now I have now no power at all....absolutely nothing.....no click at ignition switch either....nothing. Hope someone can help.....

I think I would start by checking obvious things first. Good battery, all battery connections good, fuses, and check your fusible links as well. From there I would go towards the ignition switch and see if power is there and is going to and from it.

best guess is the ignition switch on the collumn base. There is linkage from the key that runs down to the switch near the bottom. That switch sometimes does not make good contact and may stick. That is where the connection is made for the ignition and where the signal for the starter originates. Then again, it may be Christines cousin...

Check battery connections first, then move on to follow the route of the signal.
