So, went to a custom exhaust place yesterday. They had a drive on lift. They had me drive my '70 onto the lift (no issues), and they proceeded to install my custom 2.5" flowmater exhaust.

When finished, they told me to back the car down off the lift. I slowly did as instructed. . .only to be jolted to a stop with a loud metal on metal bang! I yelled out, what did I hit. . .and they said nothing arround the car. . .the under carrige must of hit the back side of the drive on ramps. So I put it in first gear and attempted to pull the car back on the ramp. I got about a foot forward, only to have the shifter pop out of gear (with nasy grinding noise), and followd by the car quickly rolling backwards for another jolting stop with another metal on metal bang! I tried it again, this time holding the shifter forward and got it back up on the lift.

A quick inspection showed that there did not appear to be any damage to the undercarage or any drive train parts. Besides the exhaust all hangs lower than all of the drive train parts (and there were no scratches. . .or nicks on the exhaust). There is only one spot on the car that is low enough to hit when backing off the lift, and that's the cross member that the exhaust passes through. So, we put 2X4's under the ramps and tried again. No issues this time.

I paid the nice man and went about my way. However, shortly after I began to notice that 1st gear was getting worst and worse. . .and would no longer stay in gear. . .no matter how hard I pushed on the shifter. I now have no first gear.

I quickly went to my local Corvette restoration house (Vetteran Automotive. . .good guys there), and told them I lost first gear. Joe the owner, always the comedian asked me if I went back and picked it up. For some reason, even though I was in no mood for humor. . .that made me laugh.

At any rate, Joe mentioned a few things that could be wrong but said I will have to wait until monday when he can get me in the shop. He also mentioned that he might have to cut a section of my newly installed custom exhaust out. . .because the exhaust shop welded the entire system together which blocks access to the tans. Appearently. . .the stock exaust is held together by clamps just forward of the cross frame member. . .so that the forward section can be removed for transmission service.

Sadly. . .and slowly (cause I have to start in 2nd) I made my way home, trying to think of what to say to my wife about the several hundered dollars I might have thrown away. Believe it or not, that was the worst part of the day. If I were single. . .I'd just say. . .oh well. . .stuff happens. . .and move on. But instead. . .I have to explain everything to my wife. . .and hope she doesn't get more mad than me. . .

So, now I'm sitting arround (until monday) racking my brain. . .trying to figure out what the hell happened. . .

So being the parinoind. . .yet inquisitive person that I am. I would love to hear what people think could be wrong with my tans. . .and explain to me how they think it could have happened.

One more thing. One of the first things I noticed, when I bought the car, was that when I put the shifter (hurst comp pluss) into first. . .it never seemed like the shifter was moving all the way forward as far as it goes in 3rd gear. Now that this problem has occued, it's worse than it was. . .and i have since confirmed that the shifter does not move as far forward as it does in third gear. It's about 1/4 to 1/2 inch shorter throw than third. Could this just be a simple "stop" adjustment? If so. . .why would it magically get worse from these two very low speed jolts.

Any explanations would be greatly appreciated.

Hope it doesn't turn out as bad as you seem to think it might be...and it always sucks having things go wrong, but a tranny going out isn't the end of the world, those things go out and get rebuilt every day. To be honest though, especially when you said what you did about it not going forward all the way into first gear, I'd first suspect the tranny might be okay, but that there is a problem with the linkage hitting something and not letting it go all the way into gear correctly.

I feel your pain. I have had to borrow money from my brother to fix the Vette and pay him back incrementally before just so I don't have to explain the problems with my Vette to my wife. She just wouldn't understand. She says "just put it in the garage till we can fix it" and now it is spring, the exact time to fix it! Something goes wrong with mine almost every time I drive it. It is like a comedy sometimes.

Did you check the linkage - particularly around the Z-Bar. Something similar happened to me - couldn't get into first gear. It turned out the connector was loose.

Also you could check the area where the shifter linkage arms bolt to the transmission. I was stuck in 2nd gear in my Camaro before from these being loose! Fingers crossed for you.

Thanks for everyones support.

Turned out to be a bent linkage. . .and a loose shifter base. After removal, rebuild, and realignment. . .everything is fine! Phew!

good to hear. That's a lot easier to hide from the wife than a new transmission.

Well. . .as I am sure has happened to may people. . .I have since surpassed my worst Corvette day ever.

So after about a month of driving around with my repaired transmission linkage. I suddenly lost 1st and 2nd gear. Needless to say I called my shop and told them about it. They said they would take care of it, and to drop it off on tuesday. After droping the car off on Tuesday, I began my 45 minute commute to work. Just as I pulled into the parking lot, I got a phone call from the shop. . .with good news and bad news. Good news being that the shifter issue was just a loose bolt, and they replaced and locktited in place. The bad news being that when they took the car for the test drive the second they got out of the parking lot (less than 3 feet) they heard a clank - bang- shater - thud sound followed by a really bad smell.

Turns out the water pump shaft sheered off at the berring, seding the entire fan assembly up into the upper radiator shroud (blowing that out), then down to blow out the lower radiator shroud, then forward and ripping a huge gash in the radiator! ACK!!

Needless to say I imediatly turned arroun and went to go have a look for myself. sure enough there was a ton of anti-freeze righ in front of the entrance to the shops parking lot. . .that they attempted to clean. . .and my car was in the lot with all the carnage under the hood. THANK GOD none of the body panels was damaged!!!

The worst part about this whole thing is that the radiator had just been re-cored earlier last year. The car had a new water pump, and fan shroud.

Well there all new again. . . :(

At any rate. . .I'm back on the road. . .and all is well. . .but that event now takes first place. :)

M-m-m-m-m. Sounds like a powershift to me during a road test. Better take a look at your motor mounts to see if they broke one and sent the fan into the shroud which THEN broke the shaft. Way too suspicious for me

that was the first think I thought of.

However, this is one of the top corvette restoration shops in the country . . . and the owner of the shop was driving the car. Not to mention the owner is a friend of mine.

Now, having said that. . .the water pump had been acting up quite some time before that. there was a bit of a woble in the shaft. We just figured it would start leaking. . .not snap off.
