In a continuing saga of " stumbles or dies at idle", a problem I reported I had solved by replacing both MAF relays, returned yesterday.

In summary, after replacing the MAF relays, disconnecting then reconnecting the battery to reset the ECM the car was running perfectly.
Yesterday I drove about twenty miles a combination of local and turnpike driving, then drove about four miles to shop. Restarting the car it would not hold an idle. I started the vette drove back on turnpike and local streets ( at lights I had to stay on the gas in neutral to prevent stalling ). Once back in my garage, the car started and idled normally. Today just checking, the vette again started and idled normally. I did get a code 36 last night when I checked.

Would a faulty MAF cause this idle situation???

According to the FSM for a 1989, a the MAF sensor should not be considered as the cause if a code 36 is set. Faulty ECM connection or ECM. Code 36 can be set due to poor connections at any of the relays or MAF sensor, or high resistance in the contacts or connections.

Thanks Ted,
I have a FSM and when I installed the two MAF relays I checked all my sensor connections including the IAC valve, as I stated the car was running perfectly once I disconnected and reconnected the battery to reset the ECM.

I was fortunate in being able to drive home safely. Again, once in the garage in a number of start and turn off sequences the car started and idled normally. I plan on a short controlled drive in the neighborhood to see if this problem persists.

I thought an expert might immediately recognize the situation, again thanks for helping.

Hi there,
Your 36 could be a bad relay once again. Just remember, the key with this, is that your looking for power OUT of the burn off relay. So, that being said, when you turn OFF THE KEY you should see full 12 volts on the PURPLE wire AND THE DK BLUE wire.

Thanks Guys,
I have always found this forum to be insightful, I have learned from it and offered my limited knowledge where ever I could.

I will check voltage on the new burnoff relay. thnx
