Would you loan parts off your Vette to help a buddy?

I just had an interesting conversation with a buddy of mine. He has a really sweet '67 Coupe with a Donovan Big Block, that dynoed out at 618 HP @ the flywheel.

If you have been watching the weather, you may have noticed that in the Gulf, there is a small hurricane off the Texas coast. For a time, it looked like it may head in our direction, but has since turned south. My friend, Alan, had his differential out being repaired (No wonder being behind a Donovan). Alan was getting worried that he would not be able to get his Vette heading north if the storm came this way. His plan was to borrow my differential, put it in his Vette, so he could run from the storm.

My first reaction was, "I don't think so!" Fortunately, I did not say that outloud. What I actually said was, "Anytime! I will help you install it."

The more I thought about it, that is exactly what I would have done. His Vette is pristine, mine is all over the garage, and the differential would have done me no good.

What would my reaction be if my Vette was driveable?

What would your reaction be?

If it was laying on my garage floor I'd loan it to him but if it was in my car I'd be looking for another way to help him . I wonder if your friend would have asked you for it if it was in your car . I don't think I would . Cliff

Prep the differential!

We were just activated to "Tropical Storm Alert", because the storm is turning our way. Most likely we will just get more than our fair share of rain--that's they way it always happens, but being at only 14 feet above sea level, and only 8 miles from the coast, we have to pay attention. I think I will go clean up the differential, and replace the lube oil in it. I have a suspicion that I will be getting a call this afternoon.

I am glad I had time to think about it before my friend calls saying he needs to use the differential.

Probably will be busy this afternoon!

I would think a trailer would be in order here, sometimes in the heat of action we overlook the obvious, easier way

Parts are parts...I have taken things off my car just to test someone else's car out...it's not a big deal. Now a friendship is something else...a true friend will do anything for you.

I totally agree!

I think that I was just caught offguard when he brought it up. My reaction to him was "Sure, what ever you need" -paraphrased- I would like to think that my friends would do anything I had a need for, I am pretty sure they all would.

As far as using a trailer, he has his big block jet boat behind his truck, with another friend driving it, & he will drive the Vette. It is looking more and more like we will get the wet side of the storm if it does not turn soon.

I am staying here...I have been through much worse storms, and I would rather be caught in the storm @ home than stuck in traffic somewhere. I have my john boat gassed up, so after the storm, I can play around town!

Will let you know just how much fun we are having!!

I'd would recommend a U-hail or Rider rental truck to get BOTH your corvettes out of the rain area ...and then split the cost of the rental.

Playing devil's advacate (and I may sound tainted), but this is a big red flag to me as I've been burned too many times loaning out tools or parts to friends. That is a pretty big thing to ask of you as well as putting you on the spot. Is this something you would ask of him? Then if the car could be stolen, wrecked or even having the differential damaged while out of your possesion...who would then be responsible?

Okay, I watch too much Judge Judy at times. :)

While your heart is in the right place to help a friend, I would just suggest to look at the whole picture, good and bad, then decide.

We survived!

My buddy hired a flatbed wrecker to take his Vette to his girlfriends house about 30 miles north of here.

We had about 50 MPH winds gusting causing tree limbs to break and fly past the house, lost power for about an hour, and LOTS of rain. But we had nothing compared to the people south of us where the eye of the hurricane came ashore. Most people here stayed home, except for the ones who live right on the shore.

I had an important lesson in friendship!

Most of the friends I had growing up have either past away, or moved to the far corners of the earth.

I guess I am a little guarded about relationships outside of the family. I need to grow out of that!

Just remember: Friends will help you move. REAL friends will help you move bodies... Sounds like you are a REAL friend ;)

I woudnt load parts off of my frameup restored vette and i wouldnt let my friends take it for a drive ; not after all the hundreds of hours i put into restoring it . I treat it like a baby. My one good freind pleads with me to take it out but i say 'no..i dont think so' . I know he would rip it thru the gears a few times and beat the snot out of it . No thanks....when youve got something as precious as a restored vette, you take care of it .

JMHO...very HO,

Dave
