Z06 airlid for C-5

On threads discussing replacing LS1 airlids with one from a Z06 someone said "why not just use a "dremel tool" on the standard airbox. Can someone enlighten me on what this is about. Also Is it just the lid that is interchangable and does it in fact make much of a difference over just stock? Any other adjustments required and does it affect warranty?

I have a spare one and am contemplating cutting it up to improve the air flow. What is the difference in the two?

Is it the lid or the plenum side or both?

check mid america catalog as they sell a cut air box cover(lid) and the picture is there to show you where to cut

I went with the 2002 - 2004 Z06 cover and a Blackwing stock replacement air filter. I didn't cut the stock cover because I was worried water would get in. The stock cover has a scoop and a drain molded in. The stock cover cost less than the aftermarket "cut open" covers and there is no shipping cost if you buy it at your chevy dealer. The only difference after the change was a bit more intake sound. Maybe a bit more lower end power but the is just my opinion. The Z06 cover costs only around $60. The Blackwing or K&N stock style replacement filter is around $40-50 and lasts forever.

Yes, it is an excact replacement. No negetives unless you are the EPA. Actually I had no problem with the tough NY exhaust inspection.

You could just change the lid but it still won't breathe. the only thing the stock air filter is good for is to appease the EPA. Get a K&N or a Blackwing, otherwise cutting or replacing the box cover will offer you only a minute difference in airflow.

If you are going to bother making this change, do it right, and get a free-flowing aftermarket unit. If you are concerned about water infiltration, just install a hood seal (~ $12 everywhere) at the same time.

There is a weather stripping they sell at Pep Boys that works great as a hood seal. Much better than the ones they sell in the Corvette mags.
