I'm looking at a 2001. They replaced the stock rear-end with a Z06. What effect will that have on the overall performance? Or bad effects?

Thanks,
:confused

The gear ratio on all 6 spd C5s was 3.42:1. The Z06 differential gears were shot peened for added strength, that's the only major difference from the normal C5 differential.

What does shot peened mean? Is the gear ratio different? Also it has automatic transmission if that makes any difference

Shot peened means the gears have been treated by blasting steel shot at the gear surfaces, this strengthens the gears by changing the density of the metal, making the gear more resistant to torque impact loads.

The gear ratio of all Z06s and all 6 spd coupes and verts is 3.42:1

Automatic transmission equipt Vettes (Coupes and Verts) had two different ratios depending on which rear the car was built with. The standard ratio was 2.73:1 the optional rear (RPO G92) was 3.15:1

Only the Z06 differential was shot peened.

Did that help?

Thanks for your time and knowledge! It helps allot. Sooo... how is the 3.42:1 gear ratio with the automatic going to effect the overall driving?

Thanks in advance
Jim

As long as the pcm was upgraded to work with the 3.42 gear , the car you're looking at will be a little quicker.

Ask them if they upgraded the pcm with ls1edit? and if they put in a torque convertor.

I would feel comfortable buying it if it drove nicely.

The GTO automatic has the 3.42 rear gear to give it slightly better performance.(heavier weight of GTO necessiated it)

Supposedly the GTO LS2 for 2005 in the automatic version is quicker than the six speed. fwiw..

It means that it will accelerate faster, but the engine will turn faster at any given highway speed compared to a stock rear end. The upside is better acceleration, the down side is slightly poorer gas mileage.

Yes... What DRTH VTR said.
