I am considering repainting my Z06.

It is an Electron Blue with 9500 miles on it. It sat on a lot in Chicago for a year before I aquired it and got some acid rain damage. I have tried to rub it out but it is still there to some degree. I want the thing to look like a mirror.

Am I screwing up by having the car refinished?

Heck No! The corvette you own is painted one of the best colors I personally like, it's also a rather valuable model. But do some homework, contact a local Corvette club, or any automobile club in your area and find out the 'who's who's' of paint shops. Don't settle on the first shop that quotes you an attractive price. Here in SE Pennsylvania there is one REALLY good corvette paint shop. But if your going to paint it, don't go the cheap route. Your Vette has only 9500 miles and it's well worth the time and cost to get a 'Perfect' paint job. A good job in prep and the paintwork will be very hard to detect. Then you can wax it and keep it indoors or coverd so the damage doesn't happen againg. I'd keep it in a garage myself. Good luck and happy hunting !

I agree, find a good body shop or detail shop and get there opinion on how to fix it. It may just take a good detail shop to buff, wax/polish it out. Not saying the work you have done was incorrect but the good detailers have the right tools and the product knowledge (polishes, waxes, cleaners etc) to get your car cleaned up. Next option might be a very light wet sand and rebuff of the car. If it does need to be repainted my guess is a few clear coats would take care of it.

I guess my long winded point is you have more options than a repaint.

Repainting of any car will usually detract from the value, so beware.

I had GREAT luck using a 5 step product from Griots garage. Wash, dewaxer, 2 steps of polishing, and a wax. GREAT RESULTS !!! Mirror finish, takes a little time but well worth the effort, highly recommed to every vette owner

BLUBYU, have you considered color sanding? You may not need to repaint and much cheaper. Just my $.02.

BLUBYU, you need to find a good paint guy that can wet sand your car without going throgh the clear coat. I think that it would save your factory paint job and if done right will leave a brillant finish.

Agreed, a good wet sand and buff will look better than the factory paint job. With that said, if the acid rain damage is too severe, there is nothing wrong with a new paint job. An exquisite, new paint job absolutely will not detract from your cars value, although a damaged finish will.

Definetly worth trying to wet sand first before going to a repaint. Have somebody just wet sand the hood or trunk to see if it resolves the problem before spending the money to do the whole car just to find out the etching is too deep. It is very expensive, time consuming and hard work wet sanding an entire car. It will probably run over 1000 bucks unless you can do it yourself or know somebody. Vette clear is very hard and a real @#$%^ to bring a shine back after it is wet sanded. You could very easily spend 20 to 40+ hours on the job.

you might also try clay baring your car before color sanding.. repaint seems extreme for such a low mileage car.. even if it was parked outside for a year... pix?
