ZF drain plug leak - picture

I don't want to tighten this down too much - anyone ever put some kind of sealer on the threads - not permanent - of course.

I hope Tom (trrgod) sees this, he'll be able to confirm the fact that you do not want to over-tighten that plug; he cracked his case by doing just that. Be very careful and follow the manufacturer's specs.

Thanks Ken, it's not that tight, I was on my back & using left hand. I've got a torque wrench, but a big one I use for wheel lugs, so not sure how accurate it'd be at the low end.

I figure there should be some thread sealant (not perm) that would fill the gaps & resist oil.

I'd rather a drip than split the zf case. Yikes!

Problem is now I gotta chg the oil again - not hard - but - maybe I'll stick the castrol in & see if I like it.

Aren't you supposed to use a crush washer or some other sort of similar item, a'la the engine oil plug?

There's no place for it. Check the picture, there's no lip on the plug that screws in. The plug has a taper, just like plumbing fittings.

You have either screw it tighter, or put some sealer on it.

Leaky plug

If it's a taper thread, Teflon thread sealer tape will work well. Use less than 2 wraps.

I'm with Cloud. Most rear end pumpkin housings use the same taper design. Rear end taper plug would run a line of oil down the housing. I wrapped a few winds of Tef tape. Next time I changed the rear end oil, that tapered plug was dirt free!
