Hello CAC friends, I have a question I just recently had my tilt steering rebuilt on my 92 vette they replaced the knuckle for the tilt steering and all pins springs ect.my question is after they fixed the steering column my aftermarket alarm system wont lock or unlock the doors now and I hear a very faint sound coming from the siren area under the hood, sometimes it sounds like the alarm is going through the motions of going off as if someone was breaking into the car but it is very faint to hear unless you are right on top of the siren under the hood and it makes a constant clicking noise, we checked all the wiring fuses ect, but cant seem to find out what is wrong I believe he had the battery disconnected when replacing the steering column parts also, has any one else ever dealt with this situation or know anything about it maybe it need reprogrammed? if any advice or insight please let me know, thanks in advanced:)

Typically aftermarket alarms tie into car under steering column and the module is attached or tucked under there too. It's possible wiring was disturbed or disconnected during course of column repair. You should have repair shop review their work to make sure everything is connected correctly. I'm not a fan of aftermarket alarms generally diagnosis is limited , so when they start having problems it's time for a new system. Car should have 2 theft deterrent systems on it from factory "Pass-Key" - makes it not start with out proper key and a Content Theft Deterrent which flashes light and sounds horn when doors are unlocked and opened without key or remote. You have another thread related to RKE which remote are you using OEM or A/M?

Yeah he double checked all the wires from the alarm module and any fuses attached they all looked good and it is located up under the dash by the steering column also. I was using the remote that came with the aftermarket alarm (sorry I'm not to bright with the car lingo not sure what OEM or A/M means) when I bought the car the alarm was already installed the other thread I have the remote worked the locks but wouldn't fully unlock the doors ,everything worked fine before they made the repairs to the steering column now it don't, like I said you can hear a faint noise coming from under the hood by the alarm horn like it is going through the motions of going off but it is like whisper quiet and there is a constant clicking noise along with it and the locks do nothing now when I use the remotes. I wasn't sure if disconnecting the battery would make it so it has to be reset or not I did manage to get the installation wiring diagram for the system and after work today I'm taking it to the mechanic to see if we can make any sense out of it. Thanks for your reply Kevo

dah I am assuming A/M means after market and OEM means from the factory lol, sorry yeah I'm using the aftermarket remote

Kevos right, for what it costs to fix what you have you can get a new and improved one for a little more $
You need to negotiate having the old system removed and the wiring repaired when looking at new ones.
Please check around your area before you proceed for a reputable shop, unless you already have one.
The biggest problem with aftermarket systems is the installation, I spend a good day on a typical install where a local shop can do it in just over an hour.
BUT, I don't do Corvettes or Cadillacs because aftermarket systems don't play well with them.
Good luck Jessica

well guys thanks again for all you info, I took it to a radio/alarm specialist and after they checked it over they determined the alarms module had a short in it due to something the guy did when rebuilding my steering column that shorted out the system internally, so with that info I bought a brand new alarm system and I got to say it was money well spent I can start the car and everything from the remote now. Thanks again guys PEACE!!:happyanim:

So happy you got the problem resolved...

Jessica,
I'm having a quite similar problem with my 1994 convertible. Coincidentally, I ALSO had my steering column replaced (years ago!), but the aftermarket alarm/remote-start just started acting up a few months back (it's a Marksman M7a that was installed when I bought the car in 2003).

Which new alarm system did you buy? Does it have a smartphone activation system? What is the approximate price range including installation?

Thanks! :w

Hey Dennis I'm sorry your are having issues like I did I believe the system I got was the Clifford 5806X 1 Way alarm system they do offer a 2 way system also, the one I got is adaptable for the smartphone activation system with me having to buy the upgrade and a monthly fee for the service I opted to not have it installed, the place that installed it sold it to me for 550 that includes installation they did knock about a 100 dollars off it for me though cause I been dealing with these guys for years so the end price was 474.00 installed and trust me they did me a huge favor cause who ever installed the old system had a huge mess of wires going everywhere down there ,cut wires hanging and everything and they cleaned all that up for me, it locks and unlocks the car, it will remote start the vehicle and it will pop the back hatch and it has valet override and panic mode button it will work up to a 1/2 mile away to,I hope this helps and good luck I love the system so far and I seen them on amazon.com just a fyi good luck again let me know if any more questions :)

Thanks
