I've got an 87 and its heavy as well. You might want to go to one of the many cruise-ins in your area and chat with other vette owners to get a feel for different C4 hoods.
You could get your wife to help with the other side to make it a little easier on your back.
Bobmo
Thanks BobMo, my wife helps as often as she's available. She doesn't want me doing anything. She's very handy, way not afraid of tools or doing anything with them. Helped me repair and retrofit the gas tank on a rusty ol Chevy Lumina years ago... had a healing back then too. I laid on the ground under the car most the time, and she ran around, side to side, getting me tools and stuff, well that's another 3 day story. She's gonna help me with things I want to do to my Corvette... including but not limited to, opening the "Clam".
Hey! I'm a retired/disabled ElectroMechanical Tech... worked on stuff from the 1890s to modern junk. I'm going to retrofit this thing or die a lousy tech. I'm going to look at the years of these C4's that had different designs, like the '94 (photo attached). Except whatever I make, is sure to be a better design, like a double assist setup as a backup system, so if one fails, i have redundancy, to take it's place. I have an 18 inch incision on my back, and they cut my muscles to pieces, after 5 operations in 9 months. I gotta stay out of the hospital, but my spine is very compromised. You can google all day and never see hardware like mine... custom rods, different sized screws, horizontal rods... looks like a satellite view of the Brooklyn Bridge. It's a very nice hospital and my surgeon is the best in the world, my hero, but I wouldn't be unhappy if I never saw either ever again.
I'm gonna join the Southern Tier Corvette Club. They're in the same neighborhood as my hospital, Johnson City, NY, about a half hour away. They have cruise-in's and I'll be able to see actual cars, and how their clams work, and talk to people, make a few friends maybe... but if I join now, $45 bucks, my membership expires Sept. 30th, 2016. 3 Months. I can still access they're forum and most of the cruise-in's are free for all. In fact, I'm not quite sure what I get for benefits from my $45 Dollars. But I'll join anyway... I'm a US Coast Guard Vet, and they do things for the Veterans as a cause.
I wish the Summers here were longer. I don't move so like I used to... a lot slower. The summers move fast, I move slow, or not at all. Be lucky if I make it to one cruise night. I gotta move to some place warmer. There's a big car show at a big park (Hickories Park, Owego, NY in case you want to Google Earth it)... July 10th, I believe. The park is only about 8 miles from my front door. I'll put my car in just for the fun of it, but boy o boy, I have a lot of things I want to do with her to make her a bit more special, like a beautiful woman all dressed and made up, on her way to a fancy ball, hobnobbing with the social elite. She's Very Pretty, just as she is, so I believe.
John
PS. Looks like only '84 & '85 had that broken-elbow hinge lock thing on the passenger side. Looks like everything else had those gas tube piston assist things like the ones on the hatch.
