Clutch? Transmission? Other? Help.

I'm looking at a 98 six speed. Needs some work, a kid took out a cable writhe the front drivers side. That's all pretty straightforward. The guy that bought it from the kid was driving it home and it kicked out of 3rd. Now the doesn't want to go into gear etc etc. I've seen threads about that, however, when you start the car, shifter in neutral, its normal. Besides the going into gear bit. Shifter in neutral and you start letting the clutch out and it tries to pull like it's in a gear. Any knowledge or advice is greatly appreciated as im trying to decide on pulling the trigger.

Couple of words that bring up red flags: kid and cable.

Find a better one.

For the price, even with the red flags , its worth fixing. I was just curious if anyone had any clues as to what the issue might be.
