the headers that callaway made for the snat 490 , what were they 4 tube like watson, jeal or are they a shorty type ? anyone have knowledge of these ? thanx for any help

These headers feature/incorporate the cats INTO their design. They are very slick. Not the same design as others, I had scanned a long time ago, a pic of them - they do give power for sure!

Gotta run though... :w

They modify the '90-92 headers. I believe they basically just change the primary tubes and the collector into the cat to eliminate the pinch they have from the factory. They are 1 3/4" primaries if I'm not mistaken.

Callaway claimed 10hp gain on a stock car.

The flanges are thicker than stock!

:)

The gain was reported as 20hp and 10 lb-ft of torque over a stock LT5.

The inlet to the converter was opened up as part of the process and was $2,500/exchange when new.:cool
From this post, the price they'd quoted was a fair bit less: http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/forums/showpost.php?p=651555&postcount=18 I assumed then that this was the price to modify my existing manifolds. I don't know for sure that's what the price included though. Or maybe they just have some laying around and want to clear them out. I didn't clarify it, as LT's made more sense for me.

I guess I recall the gain wrong. It's hard to imagine they make such a gain though. Long tubes with 2" primaries only gain about 20whp. These are extremely short 1.75" tubes. According to this doc, though, that's what they claim: http://callawayownersgroup.com/Images/supernatural/s9.jpg

What is odd is they claim +25hp on a SuperNat LT5. However, the SN with stock manifolds was claimed at 475hp, and with the header/cats at 490. It should make 500hp, not 490, according to the header claim. :confused

490 IS THE NAME OF THEIR ENGINE PACKAGE NOT ACTUAL HP.
MY 490 MAKES OVER 500 HP.
ALL OF CALLAWAY ENGINE PACKAGE NAMES ARE A LOWER NUMBER THAN WHAT THEY ACTUALY MAKE.
IF THEY MADE TAGS FOR ACTUAL HP. THEY WOULD HAVE TO HAVE THEM CUSTOM MADE FOR EACH ENGINE.
ALSO WHAT WOULD YOU ADVERTISE.
EVEN CHEVROLETS 505HP Z06'S MAKE OVER 505HP BUT USUALLY WITH IN 10-15HP BUT SOME HAVE MORE AND SOME HAVE LESS, BUT NOT LESS THAN 505HP.
OK!

Well Callaway isn't churning out tens of thousands of engines. I wouldn't expect them to have significant variance.

However, even if that were true, there is variance on the headers as well. Not every car will have the same gain. So apparently 25hp is within this variance, so you'd think 475+25 would be as well.

Anyway, no biggie, wasn't trying to start something.

When you say yours made over 500hp, this is from the Callaway-supplied engine dyno? Have you ever dyno'd it on a chassis dyno? It would be interesting to see what the loss really is, as usually it's a guess based on not much.

YES,
CALLAWAY'S ENGINE DYNO!
I DON'T REALLY CARE WHAT A DYNO SAYS; I DON'T GO TO DYNO RACES.
IT'S JUST A BENCHMARK!
I WOULD RATHER DRIVE, THAN DYNO.

i dynoed my snat475 as soon as i got it . i have found with the 2 other zr1 i have built. the dyno is GREAT TOOL . to see what improvements generate hp and tq wise . also with a wide band o2 bung welded in a great tunning tool for finely tweaking ones prom.. i am fortunate to have one at my beck and call 24 hrs a day . the key is to use the same dyno if possible . i like drag strip testing but driving 200 miles one way to get ,maybe 3 runs in,doesnt flush . so we use our g-tech which has a cool program you can download and load your runs to find out all sorts of cool stuffthey can be dialed in to be within a tenth and 2 mph of the drag strip. but as i understand it the snat was 475 hp advetised in the sales broucher and 490 the same and it goes without saying that the actual hp would be +or minus - 10 to 15 which is no bigge its alot more than stk. it still is the slowest zr1 i own , but is the coolest with the coilovers and brembo brakes and the callaway name

YES THE DYNO IS A GREAT TOOL FOR TUNING WHEN YOU MAKE CHANGES.
SOME TIMES THE CHANGE WILL MAKE A LOSS.
SOME PEOPLE ARE ALWAYS MAKING CHANGES LOOKING FOR MORE POWER.
I LIKE BIG TORQUE.
BUT IF YOU ARE HAPPY WITH THE WAY IT'S RUNNING THERE IS NO NEED.

there is allways the need for just a little more hp. it what keeps one young :D

A lot of people don't understand that. That's why I brought my 06 back to Callaway to upgrade from 560 to 616.

O will never be happy with the power i have . I will allways want me , have been that way for over 30 years .my black zr1 runs 11.30 @124+ mph at famoso. just spent 2k in roll bar and upgrades safety wise so i can mod her some more to try to dip onto the 10s. cant help it , if i ever stop wanting more someone shoot me as i had to have lost my mind:D

Sounds to me that you are perfectly normal... more is always better... that is why we are here ! :beer
