I need to replace the extension housing bushing on my muncie 4 spd. the tranny is out, after the shift rods are out of the way, can I just remove the bolts that hold the ext. to the main body, and pull it off to remove the bushing from the back or is there another way?,

Snap-On makes a special tool that will remove and re-install that bushing without removing the extension housing (photo below), but it's expensive. Before you can pull the extension housing off, you need to drive the pin out of the reverse shifter shaft (from below - it's tapered) and pull the shifter shaft out far enough to disengage the shift fork from reverse gear, then you can pull the housing off.

Yeah, I did see a similar tool and they are kinda pricey for a one time shot, but it looks like I will pop out the pin and have at it, thanks :)

It's a year since I rebuilt my Muncie so I may not have this all correct, but I think the extension piece comes off easier than it goes back together. Here's a pic of what you'll see once it's off. Notice that the reverse idler gear just kinda drops out. Getting that all back together was a little fiddly.

Don't forget to replace the seal while you're at it.

To add some more detail on the reassembly challenge - I seem to remember that the problem was in getting the reverse shift fork to engage with the gear on the shaft while sliding the housing down over it.

Another point to watch is the ball-detent assembly on the reverse shaft. If that comes out, which it's likely to, that too is awkward to put back together.

Take it slowly and you'll be fine.

John I have heard of that tool but haven't seen it. Thanks. How much does that cost? I've always pulled the tranny out and ended up going through it at that point.

I don't have one, but a neighbor where we used to live had that one - I think it was around $200 off the truck.
