Need info on 1st to 4th skip shift( owners manuel calls it gas saver-Cags) How do you disconnect it and where is it located? Will changing it mess up on computer
KR

You need the skip shift eliminator. I got mine off the big autions sight or you can get on from Ecklers. Intall was easy.

Or, you can simply drive the car in a manner that skip shift rarely or never is enabled.

Then you don't have to buy or install anything

;LOL You have to excuse Remo, he is coming off his winter meds. Glad to see he is still sharp as his Corvette! ;LOL

Beam me up, Scotty. There's no intellegent life here.
:)

There are two ways to disable "skip shift" on a 1996 or later Vette.
1) Install one of the "skip shift" eliminator products.
2) Have someone who knows how to tune, disable the skip shift function in the cal.

You have to do it one of those ways because, starting in 96, the skip-shift feature is among the engine controls which are supported by OBD-II diagnostics and if you simply unplug the solenoid, the service engine light will come on.

But, really, only people who either are control freaks or are not well-versed on how to drive manuals properly need to disable/disconnect skip shift.

If you look in the FSM and read under what circumstances the one-to-four solenoid comes on, you'll see that the vast majority of situations where you get skip shift is if you "short-shift" out of first. Perhaps the most complaints about the feature come from people who make left turns and right in the middle short shift to second, ie: the get the car rolling in first, begin to turn the wheel then, do a low-rpm shift out of first, right in the middle of all that. Of course, that's not always a safe way to drive.

The reason skip-shift works as it does is that the feature is mainly a hedge against having to install much more restrictive exhaust systems would would otherwise be necessary to meet pass-by noise standards. The test requires the car to start out in first gear then shift to the next highest gear and go by the microphones at WOT. With skip-shift enabled, the "next highest" gear is fourth, so the car runs the test at a lower rpm in 4th rather than at high rpm in 2nd. It is, thus, much quieter and passes the test with a less restrictive exhaust.

We should all be thankful for the hated skip shift because, otherwise Vettes would give up 30 hp more to quiet the exhaust more at high rpm.

Sorry Hib by I'll have to agree with Remo. The 1-4 shift has nothing to do with ones ability to drive a stick nor does it have anything to do with proper shifting timing. The technology is there to help support and meet EPA guidelines, not to help us become better drivers or because it's better for the car. Hib's statement that one can simply learn to drive around the shift eliminator is not false but some of us like to shift at our will and not by government guidelines. I never had problems with the system but I still installed the CAGS eliminator and will never take it out! Control freak, you bet ya or maybe call me a rebel but I like it.
:w

To eliminate CAGS or not is entirely a personal preference, either choice is good.

Hey Hib, how the heck do Mustangs get away with a stock exhaust twice as loud as a Vette's? Especially if GM had to jump through the hoops you're talking about?
